Do you ever look at a room design and wonder what exactly makes it work SO well? It can be difficult to pinpoint why some rooms catch our eyes so vehemently, so here at EHD we like to break it down for you (and ourselves). Pulling together a cohesive and beautiful space is an art (duh), but we think it’s doable when you have the right knowledge and grit to get it done. When Dee Murphy pitched us her latest bedroom reveal, she mentioned it received a lot of attention on her Instagram. None of us were surprised, of course, and we realized it is a perfect example of a bedroom that hits all the marks. So today, we thought we’d share her gorgeous bedroom and walk you through all the steps that can help you create a dream bedroom of your own. 1. Calm But Not Boring Color PaletteBed | Quilt | Sconces | Curtain Fabric| Nightstands | Frames If you’ve been reading this blog for a while you know that we love to stress the importance of a cohesive color palette because folks, it is so important. When you keep a clear color palette in mind when choosing textiles, decor, and art, your life will be 10x easier and you’re guaranteed to have a room that brings you joy. SO, if you are starting a room design, 100% begin with a color palette. Here’s how:
In this bedroom, the dark blue walls set the tone and you see different hues of blue in the rugs and textiles. The burnt orange accent color comes in through the bedding and decor and a mixture of natural wood tones and brass accents completely round out the space. If you want to do a deep dive on choosing a color palette Emily wrote all about it here. 2. Floral MixingFloral patterns can be intimating to work with but when done right they make a huge impact. When mixing florals, again, you want to keep in mind your color palette and vary the pattern scales. Here, the floral curtains are the obvious show stopper but if you look closely, you can see the quilt has a floral pattern as well. Also, the curtain pattern is a much larger scale than the quilt pattern. The two work extremely well together because the color of the quilt pulls from one of the main colors on the curtains. Again, another example of how sticking to your color palette does wonders. Dee also complements her floral patterns with natural floral arrangements that highlight the accent colors she wants represented throughout the room. 3. The Art Of CollectionsCollections are often personal so they are a great way to bring a unique flair to a space. You might even have a collection in your possession already and you don’t even realize it. Think about things that you have multiple of i.e. hats, small lidded boxes, figurines, or even variations of the same genre of art. These collections can be highlighted in your design by placing them close together, and in doing so you create an interesting focal point that feels special to YOU. When you think about a collection, make sure that it is a collection of similar items that are not uniform. You don’t want a collection of the same exact thing, but you do want them to be in the same category. So if you have a collection of vessels and you want to display them together, make sure they vary in size, height, shape, and even color. Dee’s collection of figure drawings is a perfect example of this. She arranged them around the focal point of the room (the bed frame) so they immediately catch your eye and they are similar enough to feel like a collection but they each have a uniqueness to them. 4. Mix Of High And LowA classic EHD rule of thumb is: pretty looks good with pretty. You can have a high-end nightstand and style it with a $10 vase and thrifted candlesticks. In reality, you also WANT a mix of high and low so your room doesn’t end up being too stuffy or predictable. High-end pieces often make your affordable pieces appear high-end, so you save money and end up with a room that is much more exciting. Cheap finds are fun and often a price point doesn’t even matter when everything looks well together. 5. Mix Of Vintage And ModernWhen you mix both vintage and modern pieces, you won’t ever run the risk of your room feeling too “catalogue-y”. Vintage and thrifted pieces will make your room feel eclectic and different and the newer products can elevate or complement your more exciting/unique pieces. Much of the decor Dee has sprinkled throughout this room are vintage or thrifted, and the main pieces are modern. The bed, nightstands, curtains, sconces, and quilt are new while the rest are found pieces. This mix of both new and old makes the room feel special and highly curated. And there you have it. Our 5 quick and easy steps to think about when designing your own room. Now that you’ve made it this far, you deserve a furry surprise: HOW CUTE. Now, because I am nosy and curious I’d love to know what is your favorite part of this room?? Mine are those floral curtains of course. Tell me everything below and have a lovely Thursday! xx *Design by Dee Murphy The post Emily’s Friend Dee Murphy’s Bedroom Blew Up On Instagram – Here’s Why It’s SO Good… appeared first on Emily Henderson. My name is Royale Ziegler and I am a stylist, entertaining expert, and the Chief Marketing Officer for Party Supply and Home Decor business, Bonjour Fête. Last year I moved from Silver Lake, Los Angeles to Park City, Utah where I recently remodeled my home and am in the process of building out a Salt Lake City warehouse/creative studio for our company. One of my favorite things outside of decorating for parties and holiday parties, is to decorate my living space in accordance with the seasons. After making the move last year, and several storage units later, I truly realized how important/practical it is to purchase holiday decor items that are less single-use and more versatile and reusable. Another lesson born from the move has been to find inspiration in my surroundings. Okay, so that wasn’t as simple in LA, but in Utah, I wanted to make sure the space felt light and airy like our California-cool home was, but that it also felt organic and woodsy without going full-on log cabin. The four-year-old home we purchased had great bones, lots of light, and a single-story floor plan which I have been dying for now that my son is older and takes a lot of verbal coercion to get ready for school. So much easier to yell in a single story! Unfortunately, a lot of the homes in Park City are all about dark and/or filled with orange wood on wood, wall-to-wall carpet, and multiple shades of beige on the walls, base and case, doors, etc. So, I had to wave my magical neutral wand and introduce some white and light colors to the space. Wall Paint | Cabinet Color | Floors | Cabinetry by Peirce Cabinet Inc. (Rift Sawn White Oak with Clear Glaze. Sorry No Website) | Island Countertop (Nocturnal Honed Granite) | Surround | Appliances | Faucet | Cabinet Knob | Cabinet Pull | Pendant | Barstools Now that we are living in our mountain chic dream home, I was more excited than ever to dress it up for the holidays. I wanted to respect the grown-upness of the space and keep the decor more elevated and focused than what I have done in the past. While there is still a lot of fun to be had with rainbow or pink Halloween decorations (I am saving these colorways for Halloween parties) I myself am feeling the need to move in a different direction, one that feels more aligned with the home and skin I live in. I want to be able to hold on to a lot of the seasonal purchases I make and so, that means buying items that are timeless and less trendy, you can pretty much guarantee that black and white will always work for Halloween and that orange can work for both Halloween and Thanksgiving. (It’s all about picking the right orange.) With all of this in mind, I hope to offer you some tips on how to style your space in a meaningful and lasting way for fall, Halloween, and Thanksgiving without spending all your dough. Tips On Transitioning Your Holiday Decor From Halloween To Thanksgiving:Stick With A Neutral Color-StoryIncorporate creams, blushes, browns, and blacks with pops of autumnal colors like orange and mustard. This way your seasonal decor feels more evergreen, while still fall-forward, and without catering to a particular holiday. (Clearly, this design aesthetic is applied throughout my home, we’re big fans of neutrals!) If you’re not into neutral, there are a ton of fun black and white and colorful fall items to pick from. Use Organic Materials Like Dried Florals And Real PumpkinsDried florals in vases (which you can switch out to feel more Halloween or Thanksgiving) and in wreaths will last well beyond one holiday. Switch out the ribbon and accent decor on a dried wreath to make it more holiday-specific. We used bats and black ribbon for Halloween and faux leather pumpkins and a gingham fabric ribbon for Thanksgiving. There are also a lot of great faux options out there, we used branches featuring acorns and maple leaves in the kitchen! When you are done with your pumpkins, make toasted pumpkin seeds! Mix High And Low TabletopChandelier | Dining Chair | Tablecloth | Scalloped Plates | Napkins | Long Stemmed Pumpkins Le Gobble Turkey Melamine Plates Spend more on permanent, reusable items like table linens and dinner plates, then mix in fun, holiday-specific paper (the ones I used are made from eco-friendly paper) or melamine plates and napkins for a touch of whimsy. Plus, you won’t have to do as many dishes! Go Heavy On Pumpkin DecorationsThey work for both of the fall holidays and come in many different sizes and textures--linen, paper, faux leather, flocked, etc. Change Up Your Artwork!White Tassel Garland | Paper Mache Ghosts Pumpkin Garland | White Tassel Garland I switched out the screensaver on my Samsung Frame TV to mix up the mantle moments! (Note, these were two photos I took on my iPhone, free to me!) Don’t have a Frame TV? Pop a cute print-it-yourself print on your mantle or shelves from shops like my friend Stacey’s at Threadmama or Etsy. Shop Small, Local, And Women-Owned When You CanWe shopped primarily with Foundation Goods, Flower Bar Co., and of course, Bonjour Fête. While this may not necessarily be a tip on how to decorate for less, it is still worth mentioning. If you’re intentional about your spending on goods that can be used for both holidays and beyond, paying a bit more to support a small business can go a long way as successful local establishments often help communities thrive. And when a community thrives, home values rise and boom—you stand to actually make some money! Plus, a lot of holiday decor out there is made from plastic, ew, so shopping small and utilizing organic and/or recycled materials means less waste! Lastly, it is all about quality over quantity especially if you’re hoping to use your decor items for more than one season, and small businesses certainly have the edge over big box stores here! (And, if you do go big box for some items, try and shop designer collaborations like Justina Blankely’s Jungalow line for Target, from which I scored the cute tassel garland that was giving me ghost vibes.) Let’s Get Into These Floral Varieties From Shawn ChamberlainAnother incredible upside from the move has been connecting with an inspiring group of women! The Utah creative/maker scene is ripe with female talent and everyone is so kind and genuine. One of my favorite people is Shawn Chamberlain owner of Flower Bar Co. in Midway (the world’s sweetest town). Shawn joined me for a day of arranging and decorating and has shared some tips for you in case you don’t have a Shawn to call on! Ghost Arrangements: Curly willow branches, celosia, bittersweet, bleached oak leaf, bleached fern, explosion grass, bunny tail, dried gypsophila, eucalyptus seed. Thanksgiving Centerpiece: Dahlia, butterfly ranunculus, hydrangea, garden rose, strawflower, spirea, amaranthus, explosion grass, bittersweet Wreaths: Bittersweet, painted fern, dried broom corn, scabiosa pods, eucalyptus seed, copper beech, curly willow branches If you want to DIY your florals, here are some helpful tips for arranging on your own: 1. Start with a clean vase and add clean water. Switch up your vases seasonally and obviously we cannot get enough of this paper mache ghost bucket for Halloween! If you do choose a vessel that is not fit to hold water, use a smaller vase inside—here we propped a small vase up inside of a small hatbox! 2. If you are bringing a bouquet home from the grocery store, consider adding fresh foliage and grasses cut from your own yard. Shawn loves to cut and mix in herbs, ferns, small branches (especially fall-colored branches), and even some weeds—yes weeds!—like thistle, grasses, berries, and tumbleweed stems to her arrangements. Bringing in dried elements like yarrow or faux floral spray is a fun touch too! Afloral has a great selection. 3. Cut your stems on a 45 degree angle and then add them to your vase one at a time. Let the stems place themselves, droop, twist or curl the way they want to in order to achieve that effortless, gathered look. 4. Be sure to refresh your water every few days and pull out any stems that are spent. 5. Take lots of photos of your creation and give yourself a high five for creating something beautiful to enhance your space! There you have it! I hope that this was helpful and that you are excited (like me:)) to decorate, not in any way overwhelmed. The holidays are about joy so however you choose to decorate, may it bring just that. Originally from Emily Henderson https://ift.tt/3B0TzmE Today’s post has been in the works for a while. It’s a topic that has been talked about many a time in the EHD office, requested by more than a few of our readers and that one piece of furniture that Emily had been on the search for years til she found them here. That’s right. It’s time for a comfortable dining chair roundup! As someone who has truly never owned or had a comfortable dining chair growing up, I feel your pain (especially in the buttocks region) but fret no more since we have 96 chairs with and without arms for you to choose from at all different price points. Plus, some very useful tips to consider when choosing the right chair for your own dining area. Before we get into all of those pretty and more importantly comfy dining chair options below, let’s first take a moment to go over some of our tried and true ‘rules’ (aka guidelines) you can implement in your own space. Even as a trained interior designer I am constantly referring back to all of our design rules posts because let’s be honest sometimes design can be a tad overwhelming and very subjective so it’s nice to go back to the basics of why a space will visually work better than others. It all comes down to measurements which is something that makes sense to me. Not really the math aspect since that is not my forte…shhhh, I know it’s used a lot in interior design (hello best friend aka my calculator). But proportions and spatial planning is ‘my thing‘, it’s probably the reason why I also love to organize and help others pack to move. OKAY, enough about my odd hobbies, let’s get into those Dining Chair Rules… Figuring Out Your Table Size & How Many Chairs to BuyYou can’t really pick out your dining chairs without first knowing the scale of your dining table. I mean you can but it will probably be easier to start with the larger furniture piece and then add in your chairs later. So what size table do you have and how many chairs will you need to purchase? Here is a seat guideline for rectangle tables depending on size:
And for round / square tables depending on size:
Keep in mind that no matter the size of your table you will want to leave approximately 24″-26″ width of eating space per person + an additional 6″ between the chairs to account for elbow room and ease of a person getting up, out of their chair from a fully occupied table. This will spare your guest (once we have those again) from an awkward moment of asking the person next to them to ‘scooch over a bit’ to be able to get out to use the bathroom during a dinner party. The width of most dining chairs will be between 16″-20″ with the ‘more comfortable’ ones in the 20″-25″ range.
Hot Tip
To make sure that the number of chairs will work with your table size, measure from the widest point of the chair and from the inner of the legs of your dining table instead of the top of the table. Two other things to take into consideration – 1. If your dining table is on the smaller side try opting for a chair without arms to save on space. 2. If you buy additional chairs for when the table is extended to the maximum length be sure to figure out a designated spot for them to live since that might happen only a couple of times throughout the year. Choosing the Right Scale Chair & Finding the Comfy FactorNow, let’s figure out the right scale of your chairs for your dining table. Most standard dining tables range in height between 28″-30″ but there are some dining tables that are more counter height in the 34-36″ range so make sure to take a second look at the dimensions before you ‘add to cart’. We are going to focus on the standard dimensions today as they are the most common. The seat height of a dining chair will be between 17-23″ and there should be about 12” of space between the top of the seat and underside of the tabletop or bottom of the apron. If your dining chairs have arms they should be able to slide under your table with ease so be sure to have at least 7” of clearance between the top of the arm height to the underside of the table or bottom of the apron. Speaking of height let’s talk about your chair’s overall height in consideration to the scale of your table. Meaning that if you have a table that seats 4, approx. 42-48″ in diameter, steer clear of the chair that measures 48″ high overall and leave that to the larger more formal dining table sizes. It will just feel more proportional 6 Factors to Consider that Will Make Your Dining Chair More Comfortable:
Hot Tip
On big box retailers websites take a look around to see if you can search by customer rating, that way you are starting with the furniture pieces that others have verified to be comfortable or to be a quality product. Now that the school lesson portion of this post is over, let’s talk about the fun stuff and get into our comfortable dining chair roundups. The ‘Armless’ Comfortable Dining ChairsPersonally, I am a fan of the “armless” dining chair because typically they are less expensive than those with arms. Who wouldn’t want to save some cash on a surprisingly expensive piece of furniture that you have to buy multiples of them??? Speaking of cost, be sure to take a close look at the prices cause some of these beauties come in a “set of 2”. 1. Faux Leather and Metal Dining Chair (Set of 2) | 2. Middleton Side Chair | 3. And if you are a part of the EHD Insider Community you might’ve already seen the special sneak peek of the mood board where we are using these nightstands from her line in an upcoming project! Also, I can personally attest to the comfort factor of #40 since we used them in the dining room of Portland project (see photo above) and where I did countless hours of work in that very chair on the end by the french doors. So there you have it! I hope by now you feel confident to pick out the most comfortable dining chair for your home and again if you need to check out the rest of the dining room rules do so here. And if you don’t really care so much about only the comfort factor but want some more affordable options check out this post here or want to know how to mix and match dining chairs like a boss click over to this post here. Originally from Emily Henderson https://ift.tt/3iUsWHj I wish I could remember who threw out this blog post title in our last brainstorm. Originally it was simply “How To Make Your Living Room Look Good” and we all laughed it off… at first (even the person that jokingly said it). But then, as if the same lightbulb unanimously lit up above all of our heads, we looked at each other and said, “wait is this kinda an awesome post title/idea??” Sure we have covered all of these tips on the blog more than a few times, but it’s kinda nice to have them all in one place, right? Like a living room design checklist that’s easy and not at all intimidating. Like a “Living Room Design For Dummies” expect no one’s calling anyone a dummy! I think we’ve all been there, staring at our living room, scratching our head as to why it’s just not “right”. Well, that is allllll about to change because baby, you now have a crystal clear list of only seven things to do to fix all (ok, most) of your living room design woes. First up is our NUMBER ONE… 1. DON’T: Have A “Too Small Rug”Look, large rugs don’t usually come cheap which is a very understandable reason for not being able to “go big or (don’t) go home because your rug is still too small”. But I promise there are affordable options if you dig, wait for sales (remember Black Friday is only 2 months away but also HOW?! WHAT IS TIME?!), or take a little extra time to save up for the right one. This post goes into all of the things you need to know for choosing your perfect rug and has some shopping options (or at least some great places to look if you don’t see something that grabs you). It’s our #2 Design Mistake so we are passionate about it. THE GO-TO EHD RULE CHEATSHEET
Painless right? Well, this next one might not be so easy for some of you. 2. DON’T: Clutter Your Space With Too Much StuffI am a HUGE offender when it comes to buying wonderful little things I don’t necessarily need. If I turn my desk chair around right now, I am staring at three, yes THREE candelabras. I’m getting better but it’s a constant struggle. And this tip may have maximalist UP IN ARMS but let me make my case/you don’t have to follow every rule if you are happy with what you’ve got going on. But sometimes it’s easy for things to get “bitsy” and too “visually busy”. If you want to keep your maximalist style going just make sure there’s a good variety of scales in your decor. That is going to really help your eye bounce around instead of getting a wall of “the same”, where nothing really stands out. But for those not wanting to go maximalist and prefer mediumism (that’s me!) or minimalism, this is for you. You want to let the things you really love have some breathing room because that will let you breathe a little easier. For me, clutter or having too much stuff in a space gives me low-grade anxiety. Sadly, I’m not kidding. I promise how your home looks affects you both good and bad depending on how happy you are with it. Look at this photo of Emily’s old living room. The color palette is SOLID, helping it to look less chaotic but still interesting with the varying tones, materials, and shapes, yet nothing is packed together (like in her old old old living room in the first photo). They’re still plenty of beautiful pieces but it’s less crammed so you can take it all in. FYI this also VERY much goes for furniture too! Julie wrote a great design mistake post about that particular topic so if you feel like that might be one of your issues here’s some help Ok, now for an easy break! 3. DO: Add A Hit(s) Of BlackIf you don’t have some solid hits of black in your living room may I suggest you rectify this STAT. Sprinkling black pieces of decor around your living room will really help to add some awesome visual weight and probably some needed contrast. If you reeeeally love a light, neutral space just go delicate like with a small vase, an accent in a pillow, or a piece of art. We promise that your room will just look more elevated and balanced. Shall we take a look at Em’s LA living room? Not one black decor piece in this living room feels heavy. Instead, they all help to ground the design perfectly. See how it’s used in the art, lamps, vases, shelf decor, and furniture accents? They are all spread out evenly so your eye can rest. A balanced design is a happy design in my opinion. But also don’t feel like you can’t go bolder! Just make sure that you have other pieces that can stand up to it and yes, balance it visually. Ok done saying “balance”… or am I??? 4. DO: Style A Throw Blanket (Or Two)SO simple but so easily forgotten. A styled throw really makes it look like your living room’s got its SH*$ together. But there are A TON of ways to do it and I’ve laid out our favorites. On the left, we have the more “organic” look. This is the equivalent of the perfect messy top bun. It may take you 15 tries, but once it’s just right, it looks perfectly effortless. EHD (and now AD) stylist, Emily Bowser’s fun hack for this is to grab the throw slightly off-center, pick it up, and then gently toss it onto the sofa. Well, that’s at least how Emily Henderson remembers it and honestly, it works!
Hot Tip
If you are wanting to style your throw in the organic look consider the thickness of your fabric. If it's too thick it's going to be very hard for it to not just look bulky. On the right, we have a slightly less organic look but it still has a casual vibe. Just fold longways then in half, slightly separate those halves, then lay it nicely onto your seat cushion under your throw pillows. BOOM! Style throw perfection. Ok, let’s get structured:) On the left, we have the “folded nicely over the chaise” look that Arlyn did for her MOTO shoot. It’s a great way to easily have your throw looking intentional and well designed. Plus, it’s nice to give your chaise some attention. On the right, is the ” folded nicely over the arm” look which is how my sofa throw is currently styled. It’s SO EASY. Plus if you are entering your living room and are “greeted” by the side of your sofa, it’s a nice way to add some pattern and texture. But if you have a decent-sized side table next to your sofa it might look a little strange. If you are a person that’s more of a video visual learner, Emily made a great IGTV on how to “throw a throw”. Enjoy! 5. DO: Put A Tray On Your Coffee TableIf you’ve been following EHD for a while you know we are tray LOVERS. They add more texture, look super pretty, and corral your things. A practical decor item does exist! Just kidding, there are a bunch but this one is our favorite. Plus it can be super affordable. Trays come at almost every price point. We like to contrast our tray shapes to our coffee table shapes. It keeps things visually interesting. Look at how great this rectangular wood one is on Emily’s beloved coffee table. It also perfectly holds some books, coasters, and a snack bowl (mandatory in my opinion). But you could also replace the bowl with a candle, small plant (if there wasn’t already foliage on the table), and/or of course, add your TV remotes. Oh, and you can also use trays on your credenzas for a little mini-bar setup. It looks very cute, intentional, and obviously fun. See Em’s version in the photo above? Also note how Emily Bowser also contrasted the shape of her tray to her coffee table? If she hadn’t corraled those pretty decor pieces, they may have looked a little all over the place. It’s a really great trick I promise. Just try it if you haven’t already. 6. DO: Add A Standing AND Table Lamp/sOof lighting is so important. So since you need light to you know, use your living room, you might as well use it to your advantage. Emily thinks that it’s important to have both a floor AND at least one table lamp (depending on your room size). Varying heights will make your room look interesting and having more than one lamp will balance the light throughout your room. Plus at night, if you have enough lamps, you can turn off your overhead lighting which helps to calm you down for the night. If you need proof that this is important, have a listen to this incredibly interesting Armchair Expert interview with neuroscientist, Andrew Huberman. It kinda blew my mind. Hey, that’s my old living room:) See how having a tall and short lamp makes your eye move around? They also speak to each other in terms of color but are totally different styles. That’s a very important thing to note too. Don’t go too matchy-matchy (aka don’t have two tripod lamps in the same room). We’ve almost made it to the end y’all! Last one… 7. DO: Create Conversation Area With FurnitureI’d say the main purpose of a living room is to have a place to hang out with people you like and want to talk to. Ok ya, if there’s a movie on then everyone pipe down. But regardless of movie night, you want to set up your living room to encourage conversation. Size obviously matters. You can’t pack in a sofa, two chairs, and a bench seat if your living room is tiny. BUT if you can have more than just a single sofa, make sure all of your seating isn’t all in a line on one side of the room. In Sara’s living room above, she was able to have her sofa and two chairs across from each other. A great conversation layout. But Mel didn’t quite have the same amount of square footage in her old place… So instead, she put a chair on each side of her sofa facing in. They aren’t across but they also aren’t technically on the same side of her sofa. (When she lived there, she and her guests could happily converse without having to turn their entire bodies to the side. Win-win-win. Alright, class dismissed! Did you learn anything? Reminded of some hot tips maybe? I actually ended up storing some of my many pieces of art that were just leaning against the wall out of my living room to make it look less cluttered. I can’t tell you how much that small change made me feel so much better. How about this. Unless you are 100% in love with your living room, I challenge you to try one before next week. Deal? Let me know which one you are going to try in the comments! Love you, mean it. Originally from Emily Henderson https://ift.tt/39TZXA1 When I think of mid-century modern design, I can’t help but think of simplicity, timelessness, and yes, Don Draper from Mad Men wearing a sexy suit. There is something about this style that oozes maturity and good taste and today’s home tour serves just that. If you love mid-century modern style (and honestly, who doesn’t??), you’ll love this historic Palm Springs condo. Christa Martin is a renovator who has a deep love and admiration for mid-century architecture, so when she found this original Palm Springs 1965 condo designed by renowned architect William Krisel, she knew she struck gold. The Sandpiper Complex, where this condo is located, is historically designated architecture because it was the first condominium development in the Palm Springs area. To honor its rich history, Christa sought to revamp it while maintaining the original charm, but there were a few updates Christa immediately envisioned in order to make her modern vision come to light. Single Cylinder Keyed Entry Handleset Through the front doors, you can see the iconic Palm Springs palm trees, the surrounding mountains, and the bright condominium landscape, all of which Christa wanted to highlight in her design. Palm Springs is almost synonymous with mid-century modern architecture and design, so it is no surprise that Christa drew a lot of inspiration from the area. Sink | SemiHandmade Supermatte White Flush/Slab Doors | MSI Classic White Quartz Countertops | Walnut Shelves | Slide-In Gas Range in White | Microwave Hood | Built-In Tall Tub Dishwasher | Lexi 8″ Bulb Light One room Christa knew needed an upgrade was the kitchen. The original kitchen layout was small and cramped so she decided to expand the open concept so the kitchen would flow directly into the living room. This openness allows for the abundance of natural light could do its magic. She also brightened the space by painting the walls a bright white which allows the light to bounce around throughout the space making it feel extra bright and airy. Bottom Freezer Refrigerator in White | Woven Counter Stool The white appliances and slab door cabinets keep the space minimal and sleek, and the walnut accents are a classic nod to the mid-century style Christa was going for. As far as the renovation aspect of the project, Christa was focused on budget and practicality so this kitchen could be as functional as possible. To keep costs down, she waited until sales were happening for the Semihandmade, Whirlpool, and CB2 items and opted for Ikea cabinets instead of custom cabinets. If time is on your side, waiting for sales to happen is a great hot tip if I’ve ever heard one. Overall, there were zero splurges on the kitchen, yet she managed to design an inviting and practical kitchen that is perfect for entertaining. Paintings by Christa Martin Is any MCM home complete without a bar area? I think not. This area opposite the kitchen functions as bar storage and more counter space for potlucks and parties. In order to make space for this area, she nixed the dining table so there is more room for entertaining and food prepping. Basket Pendant Light | Wall Paint Color | Bounce Ivory Woven Stools While most of the decor is kept simple, that oversized basket pendant 100% steals the show. It is understated yet packs a punch and adds the needed natural texture to the space. And those bar stools?? Sign me up. I love the subtle woven texture and the off-white coloring that blends really well with the neutral color scheme. Eames Catch-All (vintage) | Perigold black glass desk (vintage) | Painting by Christa Martin Architect William Krisel was known for his open floor plans and large windows to bring in as much natural light as possible. In a desert like Palm Springs, there is no shortage of sunlight, so the floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors are a key component in utilizing natural light and bringing the outdoors in. Christa decided to keep the original glass doors here which highlights the landscape and the surrounding mountains. Clad 3 Door Credenza | Rug | Black Leather Sling Chairs (vintage) Christa sourced both new and vintage furniture that would highlight the classic MCM style of the space. The sleek warm wood-toned credenza, leather vintage sling back chairs, and the woven rug all bring in natural elements while accentuating this eclectic style. When it comes to mid-century modern furniture, the focus is on natural textiles and organic curves that add movement and intrigue to a space without being too overwhelming. Just outside the living room sliding glass doors is a patio that Christa wanted to make as useful as possible. She moved the dining table out to the patio to enjoy the views and weather and added a gas fireplace table nearby for colder nights. The other side of the patio has a breeze block wall for privacy and became a perfect spot for yoga. Acacia Wood Round Mirror | Cabinet What I always love about a MCM-inspired home is the bold pops of color that offset the natural wood tones and minimal design. Orange and red hues are a classic component of the MCM style, and Christa sprinkles them in perfectly with the orange standing vase and patterned rug. If you are wondering how to add depth to a small, boxy bathroom, don’t skip the shower tile wall. The green Heath Ceramics subway tile adds an organic texture and of course color to this otherwise white bathroom. Because these tiles are hand-glazed they are not uniform, so in order to get a unique mix of tones, Christa bought seconds so she would have even more variation in the glaze. She then laid them out herself on the floor reworking the placement to get the perfect mix of hues. Korey Metal Platform Bed Frame with Upholstered Headboard | nuLOOM Braided Yvette Trellis Jute Area Rug | Casper Mattress | Quilted Velvet Round Pillow Talk about wood paneling done right. I feel like I have been transported to the 60s and I LOVE IT. This accent wall looks like it could have been original, but Christa actually bought the 10’x4’ wood panels and had her contractor install them. This is a fairly doable project for anyone who wants to create an impactful (and natural) MCM accent wall. Boucle Decorative Throw Pillow Caramel | Tufted Square Pillow Cream Faucet | Vessel Sink with Overflow | Shower Head | Berkeley Vanity | Shower Tile | Light Single Globe Pendant Similarly, in the primary bathroom, Christa installed a colorful shower tile wall and then continued the subway tile to act as a backsplash above the double vanity. Again, Christa carefully mixed the individual tiles so the different hues would be evenly spread out. Heron Blue Tile | Marble Mosaic Tile Well, it’s official. I have fallen in love with MCM all over again. How about you?? Let me know all your thoughts in the comments below. But first, buckle up for the stunning before and afters: Huge thanks to Christa for allowing us to feature this project. Originally from Emily Henderson https://ift.tt/3CVTNMf Fall 2021 Is All About Comfort Ease Affordability And Gathering Again In Targets New Big Launch9/27/2021 This fall is going to be different than last year – 100% guaranteed. The kids will actually go to school (after a year and a half of “home school”, they’ll start soccer and we might even know what day of the week it is. Sure, the end of summer is always a bit sad, but we are ready to cozy up for fall. Today I’m showing you the fall Threshold collection that just launched from Target and it’s all about warmth, clutter-free comfort, and setting up your home to create more analog moments. It’s time to cozy up, hunker down and create some touchpoint fall decor pieces that might involve a pumpkin or nine, depending on your pumpkin level (I’m a 2 :)). The Importance Of ComfortI sound like a broken record, I know, but with spending more time in our homes (and hoping that continues) I need every piece of furniture to be comfortable and inviting. I’m not interested in the chair that everyone secretly avoids sitting in. So I’d love to introduce you to a few of my favorite pieces of furniture that I LOVE, should you be in the market. That green chair is SO GOOD and rivals this bench for my favorite piece of furniture in the fall collection. We are going to get it for the mountain house since I’m bringing up my vintage chair to Portland. The color is perfect, the velvet is soft and looks luxurious (not cheap, I promise) and the wood arms are a perfect complement to most sofas. Also the SCALE … it’s just VERY good – large enough for roomy comfort, but not huge. The dining chairs and table are also EXCELLENT. The chairs feel solid and yet the leather has some stretch so they are totally comfortable. Again, their scale is very good – minimal in design, but large enough to be comfortable for all sizes. And that table – it’s such a good simple and modern design that can work in so many different styles of homes, but certainly has a fresh look. Dining Table (coming soon!) | Dining Chairs | Dried Branches Also, that sconce – SO GOOD and could easily go over nightstands. The vase is also excellent with a lot of texture but such a simple shape. Target is actually selling those plumes, too!!! 1. Faux Leather Sconce | 2. Fall Trees Art | 3. 16pc Porcelain Woodbridge Dinnerware Set | 4. Placemat | 5. Vase | 6. Champagne Silverware Set Smart Storage Pieces To Control The ClutterYou know how I feel about clutter these days (I’m NOT part of the clutter-core movement), and yet our lives require us to have some things, and many of us want to display our prettier pieces. Vertical bookcases and hutches take up less space than horizontal and they can go far more places if narrow enough. These wooden shelves above are so pretty, look very high-end (yet are affordable), and when combined with pretty canvas and leather bins they can still hide what you want to hide (toys, remotes, etc) while looking nice on a shelf. 1. Framed Landscape Print | 2. Set of Candlesticks | 3. Bookshelf | 4. Woven Basket With Handles | 5. Harvest Squirrel Bookend | 6. Squirrel Bookend | 7. Fabric Plush Pumpkin | 8. Queen – Greatest Hits 2 | 28. Taylor Swift – folklore |29. Billie Eilish – WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? That hutch is EXCELLENT. It reminds me of the one that I had in our dining room in LA for years, except even better because it has 1/2 closed storage to hide things like extra candles or linens for entertaining. The black metal is super chic and modern, but the shape and style are certainly classic. We styled it out to go in three different rooms as you can see below – dining, den, and living room. 1. Hutch | 2. Bowl | 3. Wreath | 4. Brass Leaf Bowl | 5. White Wine Glass | 6. Red Wine Glass | 7. Wire Basket | 8. Can’t Catch Harry | 9. Exploding Kittens | 10. Cards Against Humanity | 11. You’re On Mute | 12. Throw Burrito 1. Floral Diptych | 2. Media Credenza | 3. Record Player | 4. Orange Gorde | 5. Ceramic Cream Pumpkin | 6. Ceramic Pumpkin | 7. Braided Basket For those of you in need of a horizontal media piece, this new credenza or media cabinet is pretty darn handsome. It can even go behind a sofa facing out and act as a sofa table for lamps and extra storage for records or board games. Fall Touchpoints In Decor – That Can Be Year-RoundSome things are distinctly fall (pumpkins) but warm caramel-y tones and textures can be year-round (or you can store them for every fall if you are a seasonal decorator). You know I love a broken stripe pillow and that one is VERY good and would work in every single room in my house, and all I’d need is that beautiful rust toned velvet pillow on our sofa to go from summer to fall (because, yes I am a seasonal decorator which shouldn’t be shocking). Add some dried branches and some woven pumpkins and there you have it – fall, done simply, affordably, and with elegance. Baskets, Bins, And Clever FurnitureIt’s hard to see in these shots, but that basket above is SO SMART. You can transform it from low and wide to tall and deep with a quick little latch change. The wood handle on top is soo good – every single person on set wanted this basket – and I very rarely freak out about baskets. 1. Chair | 2. Sweet Home Hook | 3. Wire Basket We put it under the coffee table which takes a stack of magazines and makes it look FAR more organized and pulled together. Also, that coffee table is excellent, and the bottom shelf adds always needed extra surface area for less sightly storage (like a box for remotes or magazines/coffee table books you don’t want to clutter the top). 1. Sofa | 2. Plaid Lumbar Pillow | 3. Velvet Red Lumbar Pillow | 4. Stripe Black and White Pillow | 5. Floor Lamp | 6. Grid Blanket | 7. Wood Coffee Table | 8. Fall Candle | 9. Vase | 10. Side Table | 11. Rug | 12. Accent Chair | 13. Grid Pillow | 14. Basket | Throw Blanket The top of the coffee table is a really pretty wood tone that looks very high end and the scale of it is great for a small space. We at EHD love a round coffee table especially when the rest of your furniture is squared off. P.S. that is a smaller version of the same vase on the dining table that we LOVE. How good is that bench??? It looks so high end and the mix of textures (linen, wood, and leather) makes it definitely look special. The basket vase holds dried branches (also sold at some Targets) and those two pumpkins are my favorite and the ones we’ve brought out for years. 1. Mirror | 2. Oak Leaves Art | 3. Table Lamp | 4. Stripe Orange Lumbar Pillow | 5. Wire Basket | 6. Corn Husk Pumpkin | 7. Woven Vase | 8. Stripe Basket | 9. Bench Adding Warmth To The BedroomWhile you may not put pumpkins in your bedroom the warm textiles can certainly help the transition to winter. Emily Bowser threw that beautiful rust-toned quilt over a simple wood headboard and it looks totally upholstered and high-end with mini-channel vertical tufting!). We layered all the textures – faux fur blanket, velvet bolster, and stitched longer pillow to make it look super tied together, warm but not fussy at all. This is our formula that always WORKS (you can lose one decorative pillow if you want, but we are huge fans of less decorative pillows – just a long one or two – I’ve been writing about this for years – see this post). The mirror is EXCELLENT – it’s oversized which takes it from your average closet mirror to a more substantial piece. It has this really pretty curved wood that is thin and delicate, making it look really high-end. Good Job, Target. This can be hung or leaned and could be great in many rooms (not just for bedrooms). I love how Emily B. hung the dried flowers over the mirror to add some character and style (and they are from Target, too!). We were also all big fans of that wicker lamp – simple, textural, can go anywhere and feel boho in a really soft way. 1. Table Lamp | 2. Mantel Clock | 3. Cream Flannel Bedding | 4. Quilt | 5. Grid Oversized Lumbar Pillow | 6. Velvet Bolster Pillow | 7. 24″ x 30″ European Hillside Framed Wall Art | 8. Faux Branch | 9. Mirror | 10. Plaid Sheets | 11. Dot Sheets | 12. Faux Fur Throw Blanket | 13. Nightstand | 14. Vase With Faux Branch | 15. Rug | 16. Basket Time To Gather And EntertainThis fall there will be more gatherings, but most of these pieces are totally year-round. There are heavy pottery plates that look totally hand thrown. And the cutest little personal french onion soup containers (fun fact – it’s Brian’s favorite soup and the only one I have never made. I know what I’m going to do for his birthday in October (ahem CROCKtober, now). Those glasses are the ones that we have that I SWEAR by (thin and modern, but hard to break) and the terracotta vase and amber vessel are great additions to the collection that Emily B. wanted to steal from the shoot. 1. 14×15 Gold Oak Leaf in Ceramic Pot | 2. Pumpkin Baking Vessel | 3. 16pc Stoneware Tilley Dinnerware Set| 4. Measuring Spoons | 5. Mini Cast Iron Baker Orange | 6. Magnolia Table Book | 7. Vase | 8. Plaid Hand Towel Analog Experiences For Family AND Friends – WAHOO!!!Our family has had to drastically shift our screentime habits due to covid and the last few months we’ve really tried to focus on no screens (except our kindles). Board games, listening to records (the kids have Brian’s old record player in their playroom) have increased and become quite the joy for us all (and make us feel less like garbage parents). And yes, Target sells all those records – a lot of GREAT ones that are both classic and new pop. That record player is really good, too. Brian is a big fan of records because it encourages us to listen to whole albums through – for us it’s mostly The Grateful Dead, Miles Davis, and Taylor Swift. There you are, folks. The Fall Target Launch. It’s full of great pieces for adding comfort and ease to this season with extremely affordable prices. Everyone deserves to have an inviting and comfortable home, all year round. Great job Target, and happy fall friends. xx *Art Direction by me, Styled by Emily Bowser The post Fall 2021 Is All About Comfort, Ease, Affordability, And Gathering Again In Target’s New Big Launch appeared first on Emily Henderson. Originally from Emily Henderson https://ift.tt/3EYu8Ew Hey everyone!! How are you? How was your week?? Good? GOOD! Bad? We’re here to make it better. We’re so happy to have you here this Sunday and can’t wait to share some of our link findings for you this week. It’s full of Target carts, Etsy finds, and even a hilarious dog costume we think is so cute (even those of us who don’t have a dog are racking our brains for an animal we can put it on). Anyway, we’ll let you see it all for yourselves. Enjoy this week’s link up! This week’s home tour is the Chelsea loft of broadway actress Patina Miller (ever seen the Pippin revival?? SHE’S A LEGEND). The home was finished right before the big March shutdown in 2020 (great timing) and is filled with color, personality, and life. We love when rooms have modern, neutral walls then bring in color through furniture and decor – it feels so fresh but never boring – and the firm Evan Edward did an amazing job doing just that. Don’t miss this one (especially the fun kid’s room where the walls are definitely less white). From Emily: It’s my dress when I need THAT dress. You know the one that makes you feel cute and fun but constricts zero parts of your body and is highly comfortable. I thought it would puff out and add too much volume but it drapes really nicely. It’s part of the “cloud” trend which leans babydoll but I’m into it for the comfort and flattery level. Also From Emily: Speaking of awesome Target clothes, they just launched their Fall Fashion Designer Collection! Rachel Comey (I KNOW), Victor Glemaud, Nili Lotan, and Sandy Liang killed it. If you want to know my picks head to my instastories Also from Emily: Do you follow the new design star winner Carmeon Hamilton? If not, it’s certainly time to start and even more importantly, it’s time to start watching her new show, Reno My Rental. It’s on Discovery+, Hulu, and Amazon Prime and it’s amazing. Go check it out because she is the best!! From Ryann: Great news. I found yet another Etsy shop to add to my list of favorites. This one makes frames and they are so reasonably priced and good-looking. I just got this one in the mail and I am really impressed with the quality!! The faux wood is lightweight but the color and ornate detailing is gorgeous. It looks expensive and vintage and is exactly as pictured on the site. No question I will be returning to this shop for all future framing needs! From Mallory: I went to Target to pick up some dish soap and I came out with 3 items that I didn’t anticipate purchasing but am SO glad I did (classic target). Here’s what I put in my cart: First things first. I passed the women’s dress section and this dress caught my eye. I tried it on over my clothes (because I was too lazy to go to the dressing room) and immediately knew it was comfortable, had a very cute pattern, and would be the perfect summer/fall transition dress. I bought it in the red color, then once I found out it had pockets, I went online and bought it in the gingham too. (FYI I sized down one because it’s a very loose fit (totally a “THAT dress”) but if you’re into the very oversized thing or if you have boobs (I don’t) then keep your normal size. I’ve worn this dress every single day since getting it and it’s perfect for WFH. The second thing I impulsively threw in my cart was this candle. I thought I wasn’t ready for fall and then I smelled this (it’s shaped like a pumpkin btw) and I’ve been burning it every day since I got it. For hours. It smells like my childhood home during the holidays and makes me SO HAPPY. Lastly, I actually got dish soap (because that’s what I came there for) and was BLOWN AWAY by how amazing this scent smells for fall. Even my boyfriend (who is protesting the end of summer) was doing the dishes and said “WHAT IS THIS AMAZING SMELL I LOVE IT.” It’s called Acorn Spice by Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day and boy oh boy is it fantastic. He loved it so much that he told me I should’ve bought the hand soap. I’m never making that mistake again. And then an honorable mention goes to this dress that I almost bought (and still might go back for if I need it because I’m wearing the other dresses a little too much). It’s very flattering and I love it in the black dot print (but the brown is also really really cute). Also from Mallory: I know we talk about Armchair Expert a lot over here, but I had to mention that I LOVED this week’s episode with Andrew Huberman. I wasn’t expecting it to be as informative as it was…I learned so much about hormones and the way our bodies work. Give it a listen – especially if you struggle with getting good sleep at all – he has some interesting insights on sleep toward the middle/end that I found really interesting! From Caitlin: OH MY, I have found my three favorite fall and winter candles! Stick with me for a second: spiced pumpkin for October, vanilla and ghost pepper (!!!) for November, and Spruce for December. Spiced pumpkin is pretty sweet but it feels like living inside a pumpkin pie, which may or may not be your cup of tea. (As a Libra who grew up on Bath & Bodyworks, I’m like “THE SWEETER THE BETTER!!!” but I do know that some people prefer an earthier pumpkin scent. This one is lit next to me right now, though, and I am SO CALM because I keep taking deep breaths in – what a dream!) Vanilla & Ghost Pepper is definitely more of a crowd-pleasing scent – not too spicy and not too saccharine. The first thing that came to mind when I smelled it was like, “ah, this is what a rich person’s spa smells like on a crisp fall day,” so I’m REAL excited about bringing that vibe to my house, especially when I have some folks over for Friendsgiving! And as a lover of clean and fresh scents…oh my gosh, Spruce. Incredible. It’s my favorite of the three hands down (and I love a tree scent – this is the best one I’ve ever smelled!!!) and I can’t WAIT for temperatures to drop below 80 so I can bust this out without feeling silly. Have only had them for a few days but the pumpkin candle is putting in WORK and it hardly looks used – so happy with the investment. Highly recommended!!! Also From Caitlin: I’m sorry, I need to lie down for a FULL MONTH after seeing this Hocus Pocus dog costume (complete with Bette Midler wig). SO CUTE IT HURTS. From Jess: With the season changing, I know I need to keep my immune system strong! For some reason, I completely forget about my trusted Wellness Formula. It’s incredible whether you are trying to maintain a strong support system or are in need of a boost if you are feeling a bit under the weather. And I’m not the only one who loves it. Basically, everyone I know swears by it and it’s won 16 awards for immune system support. Just a little tip from me to you:) Stay healthy out there people! Also From Jess: As I was browsing through Etsy I came across these matches. I know it’s completely unnecessary to have matches that are pretty/kinda sexy (if matches can even be sexy) but for $4 WHY NOT? It’s officially fall and I know I will be lighting a ton of candles (like this one) well into the new year and displaying some nice matches seems like a nice little indulgence for my eyeballs. That’s all for this week, guys! Hope you have a great rest of your day and we’ll see you tomorrow!! Originally from Emily Henderson https://ift.tt/2XNJZVE Sure, as adults we can “technically” shop for new clothes whenever we need to. Perks of having a job instead of an allowance (if you were lucky enough to have one). But there really isn’t anything like the feeling of getting to go “Back to School” clothes shopping. I can remember the EXTREME excitement of getting to pick out a few new things that would make me feel like I was more grown-up and dare I even say “cool”. Furthermore, I can remember standing in front of my mirror in my “first day of school” outfit before entering the 5th grade practicing the pledge of allegiance because I didn’t want to be the only kid who forgot the words. Once again, I didn’t realize I was an anxious person until I was 33!! Comical. But I digress. So even though we don’t get to go embark on a new school year, we do all have a type of clothing (some new, some old) that gives us that same “Back to School” fall energy. So if you need some new ideas to spice things up or are also looking for the perfect loafer, we’ve got you on all fronts. Let’s start with Em… Emily: Utility And Chore JacketsJacket | Shirt | Jeans | Boots | Bandana When we moved up to Portland, it turns out I really needed some fall essentials. I didn’t have the proper PNW layering clothes (and it is a specific thing). So the essential that I was missing from my closet is the “utility jacket.” It’s versatile and truly goes with everything. Plus you can layer the way people do up here (which was not something I was used to, but now I’m on board). The one that I ended up getting was this blue one from Alex Mill and I LOVE it (and have worn it a bunch). It’s oversized and roomy, plus it has huge pockets which is great for my walks (I keep doggy bags and masks in the pocket at all times). So I can dress it down for my dog walks or I can dress it up (which I did the other night with skinny jeans and this denim shirt that I love). Oh, and I bought some stuff from Mille a while back that I had to return and they gave me store credit so I used it to buy these boots which look SO good with the jacket. They’re a bit of a splurge, but are so well made and classic and I’ll wear them forever. Since I’m trying to only buy what I NEED I’m fighting the urge to buy this Madewell utility jacket since I now already have one, but if I were in need of another I would grab this. 1. Chore Jacket | 2. Relaxed Patch Pocket Corduroy Jacket | 3. Denim Oversized Chore Coat | 4. The Cinchable Chore Jacket | 5. Willa Jacket | 6. The Frayed Lieutenant Jacket | 7. Citrine Belted Jacket | 8. Shirt Jacket | 9. Sanctuary Utility Jacket | 10. Drapey Pomeray Chore Jacket | 11. Utility Denim Jacket | 12. Button-Front Jacket | 13. Will Jacket | 14. Moonchild Shirt Jacket | 15. Workwear Collection Herringbone Denim Chore Coat | 16. Morgan Utility Denim Jacket | 17. The Essential Chore Coat | 18. Military Shirt Jacket Jess: Fitted KnitsA true shock to me and my otherwise not very fitted wardrobe that fitted knits would be a staple in my fall/winter wardrobe. But when my friend was in town a few weeks ago, we went to this little store downtown called Virgo and for fun, I tried this one on. Well, I ended up loving it so I stepped out of my comfort zone and tapped that debit card. It’s modest, can be easily be made casual but is also kinda sexy which I’m into. I’m still trying to live in my post-quarantine “take chances” mindset and this is a fun (but still safe) one. And without me even realizing it, the week before I bought this shirt at Zara (sorry I couldn’t find it online) and it’s basically the same ribbed material! I really love how these pieces make me feel which is my real one essential. I need to feel really good in what’s on my body. Here are some actual shoppable options if you are interested! O and #1 is my absolute favorite:) 1. Shoko Ribbed Colorblock Sweater Dress | 2. Collared Split Neck Pullover Sweater + Mid-Rise Midi Sweater Skirt | 3. Olivia Knit Midi Dress | 4. Olivia Maxi Dress | 5. Color-Block Ribbed–Knit Sweater | 6. Polka Dot Midi Sweater Skirt | 7. Seamless Top | 8. Ribbed Flared-Sleeve Sweater Dress | 9. Rib-Knit Dress | 10. Polo Elevated Knit Mini Dress | 11. Knit Crop Top | 12. Cashmere Tie-Waist Jumpsuit | 13. Long Sleeve Sweater Dress | 14. Ribbed Sweater Midi Skirt | 15. Ribbed Tank Top | 16. Knit Midi Dress | 17. The Ribbed Mockneck Tank | 18. Sandra Dress Caitlin: LoafersA loafer? For fall? GROUNDBREAKING. But when you live in a warmer climate and can’t take advantage of a ton of ~ cool-weather trends ~ (BRB dreaming of 8 weeks from now when I can finally wear my big sweaters), season-specific footwear feels like a worthwhile investment, you know? These two pairs are some of my all-time favorites and I love breaking them out every fall and spring – they’re 5 years old but still look and feel like new. I’m not usually much of an accessorizer either, so I feel like these add a fun bit of personality to my more buttoned-up office-appropriate outfits. In any case, I love that they take up less room than my fall boots while delivering the same “the seasons are changing!!!” message. Here are a few I wouldn’t hate adding to my wardrobe this year… 1. Bazel Lug Sole Loafer | 2. The Alex Loafer in Leather and Suede | 3. Lucero Loafers | 4. Smoking Shoe | 5. Lenny Loafers | 6. Patty Loafer | 7. Trini Loafer in Black + Patent | 8. Marie Tab Loafers | 9. Suede Heeled Loafers | 10. Patent Pointed-Toe Loafers | 11. Micah Pointy Toe Loafers | 12. Wilson Loafer | 13. Max Loafer | 14. Audrey Loafer | 15. Tully Loafers | 16. The Light Loafers | 17. The Frances Genuine Calf Hair Loafer | 18. ‘Calla’ Bootie Ryann: Patterned PantsYes, I have fallen victim to the checkered trend. When Jess recommended these pants in The Link Up, I ordered them somewhat impulsively not sure how they would fit or what size I should even order. I ended up getting a size 31 (my normal size) and not only do they fit perfectly, they are WILDLY comfortable. They look like they are a rigid pant but nope they have a healthy amount of stretch and the fabric is almost like an activewear material. It is very good. I like the patterned pant for fall idea so much that I also bought these stripe pants that are a knitted material and also very comfortable. I love patterned pants for fall because you can pair them with a simple shirt or turtleneck and a light jacket and you have an exciting outfit with very little effort. By the way, a simple black turtle neck is another fall/winter must-have IMO. 1. Polo Flannel Pants | 2. UO Bryn Pull-On Flare Pant | 3. Striped Knit Pants | 4. Sanctuary Runway Leggings | 5. Luna Pant | 6. Ellis Jean | 7. The Ragged Priest Wave Print Jean | 8. Flo Pant | 9. Colette Cropped Wide-Leg Pants | 10. Flared Plaid Pants | 11. Pull-On Knit Flare Pants | 12. Urban Renewal Remnants Checkerboard Flare Pant | 13. Pull-On Straight-Leg Pant | 14. Linen Wide-Leg Pants | 15. Make A Stand Trousers | 16. Olivia Pants | 17. Swirl Print Trousers | 18. Linen Gingham Pants Mallory: Faux LeatherPants | Sweater | Boots | Necklaces | Skirt When I told the team I was into leather (well faux/vegan leather) this fall they were shocked (and not in the way you’re thinking). Like the actual fashion trend: the leather pants and skirts and blazers galore. Remember when leather leggings were super in? Yeah, it’s not like that. It’s a baggier, sleeker, sexier kind of streetwear leather. Now let me put you at ease: I was never a leather kind of person. Sure, I had the classic leather moto jacket that I wore (well still wear) with everything. But beyond that, I was weary. UNTIL I went to Aritzia and tried on THE faux leather pants that everyone was talking about. Now at $148 – they’re a splurge (and I highly recommend trying them on in-store before you buy) and it was one of those things I didn’t know if I was ready for until it was always on my mind and I finally went for it. Now, they’re my favorite fall item. They keep me SO warm on cold nights and I feel so trendy in them (because skinny jeans are out now and you can only wear straight/wide leg denim so much before you explode imho). So now, these are the new fall neutral. I’m in love. In fact, I’m so in love that I bought a vegan leather skirt for the summer/fall transition (it’s still stupidly hot in the day here in LA) so I’ve been wearing this skirt (also looks super cute with tights for when it does get colder though) and I’m very into it. Faux leather for the win!!! Now here’s a roundup to prove it (and yes it’s all faux or “vegan” as they call it… 1. Brenda Faux Leather Straight Leg Pants | 2. Faux Leather Mini Skirt | 3. Faux Leather Shirtdress | 4. Straight Leg Faux Leather Pants | 5. Faux Leather Thin Strap Square Neck Dress | 6. Real Deal Slit Vegan Pants | 7. Long Sleeve Faux Leather Tie Back Top | 8. Originally from Emily Henderson https://ift.tt/2Y0EzHd HEY, HI, HELLO. It’s officially fall, it’s almost the weekend, and I want to take you on a little afternoon digital window shopping trip. Here’s the thing: I LOVE Halloween and season-specific decor, but I am a liiiiitle less crazy about the VERY expensive plastic pumpkins that seem to be permeating my IG feed right now. Like, there’s gotta be more to this holiday than spray-painted styrofoam, right?! RIGHT. So today, I wanted to highlight a few elevated, last-forever pieces of newly-released Halloween decor that you’ll be happy to pull out again and again, season after season. A few of these tasteful additions can make you feel like you’re living in a festive, fall home and not in like…inside of a Spirit Halloween pop-up shop. I searched ALL of our favorite retailers and feel pretty confident that I’ve picked the best of the best – let’s see if you agree, yeah? Truly Great Pumpkins1. Pumpkin Lanterns | 2. Chinoiserie Pumpkin | 3. Harvest Tweed/Plaid Speckle Fabric Wrapped Pumpkin | 4. Seedstitch Pumpkin Shaped Pillow | 5. Harvest Mini Pumpkins | 6. Terra Cotta Pumpkins If you live in a hot climate, these iron pumpkin lanterns (#1) are a minimal, bold, and super-chic alternative to, uh, ::checks notes:: a melted, rotting pumpkin on your front stoop. Love the color, weight, and shape of these – they’re an awesome modern alternative to a plastic pumpkin. Blue and white china meets pumpkins (#2) – ADORE THESE. What a lovely way to introduce the idea of fall without soaking your home in orange and black. These plaid tweed pumpkins (#3) look SO much more luxe than their $5 price tag. They’re so special and high impact without being overbearing. (I love how understated the black is, but they come in orange, too.) TERRA. COTTA. PUMPKINS. (#6) Genius. Minimalist, textured, quiet, and they can take you from September through Thanksgiving. I could see these outside in an entry vignette OR styled as a centerpiece – I love the versatility. Super Cute Florals And Doormats1. Oh My Gourd Doormat | 2. Pure Harvest Bouquet | 3. Spooky Feathers Wreath | 4. Dried Eucalyptus Garland | 5. Magnolia Wheat Wreath | 6. Hand Painted Boo Doormat This doormat (#1) makes me so happy (vibrant AND punny!) and the cute review photos of it styled in real-life are SO CHEERY. What a lovely way to brighten up your entry and exit every day! Are feather wreaths (#3) for everyone? NO. Are feather wreaths for me? YES. An emphatic yes. HUGE heart-eyes for a dried eucalyptus garland. This showstopper (#4) is from Anthropologie, but you should check if your local nursery or plant center has anything similar – I bet it’d be cheaper AND you could support a small business in your community. Easy Impact Exterior Decor1. Hyde and EEK Trick Or Treat Sign | 2. XL Skeleton | 3. Battery Operated Hyde and EEK Spider | 4. Light Up Unicorn Dog | 5. Witches Broom Set Of 3 | 6. Hyde and EEK Ghosts Lights You know I had to include ONE piece of practical outdoor decor, right? This season, I’m in love with this double-sided light-up sign (#1). Welcome folks to your home when you have candy, and flip to the other side when you’ve run out. This is my new favorite alternative to like, turning off all the lights and sitting in the dark after you’ve run out in the hopes that kids will stop ringing the doorbell. I can’t do a roundup without including Skelly (#2), guys. Is she timeless and understated? Well, KIND OF, YEAH. We love her – she’s made appearance after appearance here on the blog – and what’s Halloween without a little fun, you know? Is a huge spider (#3) a lot? Yeah, sure. But it’s also a one-and-done outdoor decor piece – throw this on a roofline (or even on a bush!) and you’re fully decorated for the year. It’s a HUGE statement for only $35 and there are tons of creative installation ideas in the review photos. This costume-wearing dog (#4) is THE CUTEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN. When I saw this, Michael’s monologue to Toby immediately came to mind: “Who do you think you are? What gives you the right?” I CANNOT BELIEVE TARGET MADE THESE. My heart has grown three sizes since first clicking through. If I had a yard, I’d be out there at the stroke of midnight on September 1st getting a full little dog motif set up. (There’s also one in a ladybug costume in case you weren’t already saying “aww” enough.) Keep visitors safe and on your walkway of choice with these smiling ghost path lights (#6). Target has a TON of great options for path lights this year (including zombie arms and multicolored versions!) but this one feels the most classic and timeless, you know? Festive Tabletop DecorI mean, it’s no shocker that I love tableware, but this is my personal number one recommendation for getting into the spirit without feeling smothered by color or in-your-face Halloween motifs. A special tray or bowl or mug that you can break out and use for a few weeks every September-November means that you can experience the season on your own terms without needing to dive into a bin from the basement/garage/attic. Plus, there are a TON of awesome, sustainable options on Etsy – just search “vintage (pumpkin, cat, ghost, general fall/Halloween motif of choice) + (bowl, plate, cup, etc.)” to support a small business AND bring some one-of-a-kind pieces to your home. BIG FAN. 1. Earthenware Mini Ghost Mug | 2. Skeleton Drinkware Collection | 3. Bat and Moon Appetizer Plate | 4. Dapper Animal Halloween Salad Plates | 5. Pumpkin Shaped Stoneware Individual Bowls | 6. Inslee Fariss Autumn’s Bounty Glass | 7. Boo Stoneware Mug | 8. Spooky Double Old Fashioned Glasses (set of 2) | 9. Pumpkin Shaped Felt Placemats (set of 4) | 10. Slink Gold Napkin Rings (set of 8) | 11. Figurative Halloween Pumpkin Mug | 12. Ghost Shaped Stoneware Serving Platter Oooooh, baby. This skeleton drinkware collection (#2) is for the Halloween die-hards out there. It’s a little too much for me (which is saying something!) but you KNOW I’d be first in line to attend a party hosted by someone with cups like this in their arsenal. Stoneware mugs (#7) with a secret. These would be kind of fun year round, TBH. These snake-shaped napkin rings (#10) are a little spooky, but they’re versatile and glam enough to use all year (if you dare :)). I’m obsessed with this ghost-shaped platter (#12). It’s quiet and so easy to mix-and-match with your existing dinnerware – just plop this on the table and the mood is set, you know? Other “Creepy” Decorations1. Alien Pumpkin Push-In | 2. Skull Trinket Dish | 3. Pumpkin Mugs | 4. Pumpkin Harvest Dish Towel | 5. Ghost Serving Dish | 6. Trick or Treat Dish Towel | 7. Metal Gourd Box | 8. Cat Candy Bowl | 9. Plaid Candy Bowl YEAH YEAH YEAH I know, I said elevated, but DANG IT. This alien push-pin decorating kit (#1) has me wanting to borrow a friend’s kid for a day of crafting. (They also have a princess one that they styled out on a Watermelon and it’s SO funny – you can see the pic in the product description.) A tiny ceramic vintage treat dish (#5) has me feeling ALL KINDS OF WAYS. My grandma used to keep M&Ms and Hersheys kisses around the house in tiny dishes like this – it’s such a fond memory. :’) If you can’t do kitsch on a dishtowel (#6), where CAN you do kitsch? I mean. There are dogs in outfits. There are cats in outfits. It’s so sweet and silly without being overwhelming. Y’all know how we feel about brass vessels and boxes here, right? This gourd-shaped one (#7) could work in your home year-round. This $2 gingham melamine bowl (#9) is great for kids at the holidays, but it’d be just as cute doing double-duty as your outdoor tableware next summer. That’s it for me today. Signing off from 82 degree LA, where I’m sitting with my Spiced Pumpkin candle and dreaming of living in a tiny Northeastern town with a quaint house and a dog and big pile of color-changing leaves. In the interim, though, this window-shopping break did the trick of getting me into the spirit. NOW – what say you???? Any winners here or decor pieces YOU break out year after year? Originally from Emily Henderson https://ift.tt/3lUjWnT A big box was checked a while ago and it’s one that all of us were pretty darn invested in. After so much back and forth – YOU HAVE NO IDEA – we came to the solid conclusion on the windows of the farmhouse. One we feel so good about, and frankly so relieved because it’s secretly what we wanted the whole time. The biggest question? Whether to keep the original diamond pattern windows on the second floor, knowing that the first floor was going to be mainly new. As a reminder, there were only 4 original diamond patterned windows downstairs (two in the living room, one in entry, and one in stairway) and the rest were aluminum from the 60s. One of the things we knew we wanted to do from the first second of seeing this house was open the living room to the backyard with large glass doors, which would mean those two windows in the living room would likely have to move, or if not they might look weird next to brand new doors. Those two were easy as we already had a place to repurpose them, but the upstairs windows were the biggest conundrum. It wasn’t an easy decision and here’s why:
Meanwhile, we had to make some decisions pretty quickly to get the window order in (6 weeks ago, before we moved). In case you don’t know windows (especially custom) have an extremely long lead time in normal times (12 – 24 weeks depending on the company), let alone in this building boom/labor shortage we are experiencing. And without windows, you can’t close up the walls and get to your finishes installed (tile, drywall, etc). So your windows can hold up the whole job. We are SO HAPPY to be working with Sierra Pacific Windows on all our new windows for this house. I sought them out because they are based in Northern CA, with a massive reforestation program where they grow their own wood there and in WA. Another reason we wanted to work with them is because not only do they make beautiful classic windows (because they do), but they can customize ANYTHING, and yes recreate vintage-inspired divided lite patterns – like our diamonds. So far we have been extremely impressed with the options in finishes (wood and aluminum clad), the customer service (I’m talking to you Chelsey & Jennifer), and quality (we tested them out in person and were super impressed). So we knew who we were going to work with on the new windows, but we still hadn’t decided on what to do with the second-floor bedroom windows. THE BIG DEBATE – Down To 2 OptionsSo the question became:
Now what we didn’t want was for it to look jarring – for the old to look too old and the new to look too new right next to each other as if was an accident – or like we couldn’t afford to redo all of them (even if that is 1/2 the truth). It needs to look intentional, cohesive with some quirk, sure. We chose #2 – To repair and keep the original windows upstairs, and design and install new windows on the first floor while repurposing the original windows in the living room (I can’t wait to show you what we have planned for them). How Will We Make These Old Windows Safe And More Insulated?
So the big question becomes how to design the first floor new windows to work with the original diamond windows upstairs. And while you won’t see this from inside the house you sure will when outside looking back at it. And if you are thinking that we’d just do the diamond pattern downstairs, the answer is we’ve thought about it, but: A. We like the idea of a simpler divided lite pattern and… B. The custom diagonal pattern was $90 each divided lite – with each window having around 12. So that’s in addition to the normal cost of a high-quality window. This threw our budget totally off making most windows $5k or more. And C. There is something less charming about all the diamond patterns in the new windows downstairs, almost competing too much with the second-floor original diamond pattern. We decided to let the original be the stars of the upper floor and simplify the first floor to be supporting characters. We are however doing custom specialty divided lite patterns in a few places on the first floor that I can’t WAIT to show you. I of course want to bring you into that process, show you how we came up with the pattern to bridge the old with the new, but it’s another long post in and of itself. But for now…here’s a sneak peek at some of the “diamond motif” windows we’ve been considering: Now I know that the windows have been a bit of a debate and while we have a lot of experts on this decision, but that doesn’t mean that we have all the solutions to insulating vintage windows without replacing them (which is the origin of the debate). I know in the past a few of you had some really unique new ideas that I’d love to hear as we still have time to make some adjustments (not to order new, but just to retroactively do anything to the old windows). xx The post The Debate: To Keep Or Replace The Original Vintage Windows (And How To Make Old Windows As Safe And Eco-Friendly As Possible Without Replacing) appeared first on Emily Henderson.
