As Birdie succinctly told Charlie while I was in the other room, ‘this tree is more fun and REALLY messy, the other tree is more pretty.’ Indeed. Since we happen to have two hang out spaces (living and family) we broke them up and put the more pretty/curated tree in the more formal space and put all the personal ornaments in here. And in here, the family room, there is a ‘no rules’ approach to decorating the tree and I just let them go for it. This is where they take out each ornament and squeal with a ‘mama I remember this!’ reaction when it is one that they picked out or got for a gift, and then they throw it on the tree, haphazardly for sure. More color, more fun, more personal. Here we go. Faux Garland | Wood Cut Out Garland (similar) | Dotted Striped Pillow | Color Blocked Pillow | Sheepskins I still wanted to keep it fairly manageable and easy to keep together, so I didn’t go all out but wanted to bring in more red. I swear that living up here and not having access to stores (sure, online but I have to order at least 10 days in advance) is making me use what we have and helping me hold back, in a good way. For instance, I could have put two wreaths in those windows (which would have looked cute in the shot) but the room as a whole had enough (and I didn’t have the wreaths). Instead, we did tree, garland, and those cute little plush toys that I’ve had forever and work so well up here and the kids love (sorry no longer available). I got a couple of new pillows because I had given all of my bolder red ones away to an EHD Insider Member when I thought I wouldn’t want red up here (I was wrong). The mantel just has a garland and a tree figurine garland that might need to be taken down because when we keep the fire on for hours it melts the hot glue holding the wood pieces onto the garland… whoops. Tree | Tree Collar | Popcorn Bowl | Tray | Santa Mugs | Bottle Brush Trees (similar) | Candle There she is, dripping with ornaments and 2-3 different garlands? Brian picked up the tree from Target last week, and I added that cute tray, a couple of pillows (dotted and color blocked) and popcorn bowl to the order but everything else we had. Don’t worry, the kids drink from those Santa mugs year-round, every. single. day. which I objected to because I wanted to keep them special but then I was like ‘why am I making this a battle?’ and just let them drink water with Santa. The bottle brush trees are from a few years ago (similar ones here). Beaded Garland (similar) | Pom Garland | Rocker We don’t have a star on this tree, which I’m ok with because the one that we had rotates neon lights on the ceiling which the kids obviously LOVE so I “let them”/insisted on them having it in their room. The rocker is from Monroe Workshop that I’ve had since Birdie was a baby and it’s going to be a permanent family heirloom. I’m pretty sure that plaid cloth is a tablecloth, FYI She is dripping with ornaments and we haven’t even got our 2020 personalized ones in the mail yet (remember this post?). A lot of DIYed from last year, ornaments from trips, or just ones that they picked out at Target last year or the year before as ‘their’ ornaments (the sequin iguana for instance). We even have a few from Brian when he was little (on the right) and Charlie’s from preschool (on the left). Not to brag but I made that button snowman last year (white and black buttons + hot glue) and it reads ‘mama 2019’ on the bottom OF COURSE. We saved a few ornaments to put on during this shoot, to try to get some family shots (and it was HARD FYI). This year I finally got around to putting all my Santa photos in frames, inspired by a friend who always does it. It’s such a fun thing to collect and put out. I’ve already amassed quite the collection:) Also what is going to happen this year??? Seems like even with masks it’s going to feel very questionable to see Santa. Thin Natural Frames | Thin White Frames | Large Wide White Frame | White Wedge Frame I love that we can pull these out every year, frame them in readymade frames (I just used these from Target) and it makes the room feel so personal and “holiday” but in a simple way of just one element. I made myself stop in these rooms, almost. I put a wreath and a cookie jar in the kitchen, and hung some wreaths and a quick tablescape in the dining room. I had a lot of extra decoration that was taunting me to spread around the house – bathrooms, kid’s room, etc, but instead, I gave it all to my neighbor and just had a newborn and it felt SO good. Are you guys feeling like you are going more all out this year? Or pulling it back? I think 2 full trees is enough for us this year *Design by Emily Henderson The post Emily’s “Messy” But FULL Of Memories Christmas Family Room appeared first on Emily Henderson. Hey everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful (and safe) Thanksgiving that hopefully left you very full. Now we’re full-blown into the holiday season and no one can stop us *que It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.* We’ve got a full out link up for you guys today, and also remember there are LOTS of great sales this weekend so check out our Black Friday post if you missed it. Now onto the link up! If you haven’t seen Ginny’s newest project, your design heart is about to explode (in the happy way:)). Y’all it’s so GOOD!! But let’s be honest, is that a surprise? So do yourself a Sunday favor and go check out the whole house that also was shot by Sara (which makes our EHD hearts explode). Then go read all about it on Clever. From Emily: I decided that this is the year I’m going to try to smell good. It’s not that I smelled bad before, but I’ve NEVER worn perfume and I don’t have a ‘scent’. After begging my more beauty/smell expert friends they both agreed that Kai smells good on literally everyone and nobody doesn’t not like it. I put it on last night after a bath and snuggled up to watch a movie with the kids and Brian and everyone, EVERYONE, was like ‘mama you smell goooooood’. It’s not overpowering, just a nice floral/gardenia scent that I LOVE. I bought the lotion and the roller ball. Brian is a BIG fan From Caitlin: OH BOY Y’ALL. After flying east at the beginning of the month and spending a little over 2 weeks in isolation, I finally reunited with my mom this week and it WAS SO FUN. She also surprised me with THE BEST THING EVER: an Apple numeric keyboard. I’ve only ever used the tiny, standard one and this has been a TRUE GAME CHANGER. I do a lot of math and data tracking here and I didn’t realize that having a dedicated number pad would make things SO much easier and make me MUCH faster!!! 100000/10, best gift of all time, SUPER thoughtful present idea for anyone else who does math on their computers all day, especially with their gift card promo going on right now!!! From Albie: Kyvol Cybovac E20 Robot Vacuum Cleaner – I call him Kyle & he vacuums the first floor for us every morning, 9:00am sharp. Very Jetsons of us, I know, lol From Ryann: I just bought these matching pajamas for my fiancé and I plus this matching bandana for my sweet dog Gus and YA’LL I can’t wait to get a picture of our lil fam wearing them. My family never wore Christmas PJs growing up but that atrocity ends now!!! I got so excited purchasing them and am official team matching pajamas forever and hopefully can get ones for us for every holiday. From Mallory: I realized I forgot to add something to my gift guide and it’s very important… I gave this as a birthday gift to my friend last year and it was such a good gift that I could NOT stop talking about it for MONTHS. Then when my birthday came around, I also received it as a gift and I use it ALL THE TIME. What is it you ask? It’s a beer on tap machine where you put any bottle or can into it and it comes out ON TAP. THAT’S RIGHT YOU GUYS IT’S BEER ON TAP IN YOUR HOME. I didn’t realize how much I missed having a foamy beer at a bar or restaurant until I got this and it works SOOO WELL. Oh, and it’s portable also, which is great if you want to take it somewhere or if you want to set it on a bar cart or somewhere and not have to use a cord (which is so ideal). If you don’t want to use batteries though, it does come with a plug-in also that’s optional, so really it’s just perfect for anyone and everyone and you should get it for yourself or for someone for the holidays. It’s the easiest one-click gift. I have a lot of good things to say about it and it’s so good that whoever you give it to will also probably have a lot of good things to say about it. From Malcolm: These puzzles by Puzzle Huddle would make great gifts for young kids this holiday season! I assembled one with my nephews over the summer, and they absolutely loved it. Moreover, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, but I cannot speak highly enough about the power of representation. Puzzle Huddle is a Black-owned business and embodies the fact that creating toys that mirror children’s skin color, hair texture, and features can provide profound affirmation for a child’s positive self image. And there’s more! They partner with a variety of artists to illustrate their puzzles, so they also support the arts! What’s not to love? Also from Malcolm: I snagged this brass-framed mirror from Wayfair a couple years ago for the bathroom in my old house. It’s hefty size and deep shelf is a real showstopper, and it looks just as good in my hallway now! And it’s currently on sale! Snag one for yourself! From Jess: I have found a really awesome gift for that stylish but really hard to shop for person on your list! Remember that incredible ribbon art in Bowser’s Dining Nook? Well the artist, Angela Chrusciaki Blehm has collaborated with andSons Chocolatiers to make probably the most beautiful box of chocolates I have even seen. They aren’t cheap but they are very special (and delicious). Also from Caitlin: THIS. ROBE. AHH. Erik actually ordered this with all his bedding (wish he had shot his photos in it) but I heard rave reviews and I’m a goober so OBVIOUSLY I HAD TO TRY IT. I had been using a cheap robe from Amazon for the past ~5 years and I had NO IDEA there would be such a difference. It feels like a hotel in my house!!! So plush and luxe! I bought it full price because I’m impatient (and it was worth it) but it’s on sale now!!! 100000/10, am considering buying another in graphite. So that’s all for today! Check back for more awesome sales tomorrow for our cyber Monday post. Now enjoy your Thanksgiving leftovers and we’ll see you tomorrow for a fun reveal! Originally from Emily Henderson https://ift.tt/3fXMUQF Another MOTO Reveal For 2021! But First Help Erik Pick Out His New Bedding With 3 GREAT Options11/28/2020 Em here – You may remember Erik from his bold, luxe, and altogether fabulous living room reveal earlier this year. Many of you clamored for his bedroom reveal (I did, too), but… it wasn’t technically finished yet. So to kick off almost-2021 with a bang and a fun project – and to take a break from the hundreds of roundups I’m sure you’re inundated with today – we wanted to start his Makeover Takeover process with an Ask The Audience. Every room needs a jumping-off point, and we decided to start this one by picking out the bedding. As I’ve written in many posts, Brooklinen makes my all-time favorite duvet insert (I also have their sheets on my own bed :)), and they graciously sent us a couple of pieces to play with. As an unexpected bonus, since it is a holiday weekend, everything here is 20% off. Great timing for a fun post. Win/win. So today, we’re presenting three bedding options. We brought in Sara to shoot everything, Erik styled out the space a bit to fit each vibe, and we also had him outline a little future design plan for each iteration. In time you’ll see this room fully revealed, but today… let’s just have some fun and vote on some bedding for our dear friend. It’s time to get out 2021 MOTOs started. Take it away, Erik… Hi gang! Remember me? I am back on the blog with another serving of my piping hot apartment. This time however, I am looking for a little guidance. I have lived in my 1931 apartment for 4 years and my bedroom hasn’t changed hardly at all. As a stylist who thrives on mixing things up, this room has felt the most stagnant. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the design of the space but I think it could be redefined and tightened up. The best (and also affordable) way of dipping my toes into this redesign process was with bedding! I wanted to use Brooklinen for two big reasons. Their quality is undeniable, and as someone who walks on the wild side, they have wonderful options with color and print! (A bonus third reason would be that they are Emily’s favorite.) I am letting the bedding that I, nay WE, decide on be the jumping-off point for a FULL BEDROOM MAKEOVER. So needless to say this is a life and death decision I am asking for your help with. Think of me as a design goldilocks. I’ve got to find one that is juuust right! As you have seen in my living room and dining room posts, I LOVE color. Yet my bedroom has always been the exception. I like the idea of a place of slumber that isn’t too visually stimulating but compared to the rest of my home, my bedroom was leaning on drab. Option 1: Thinking PinkTerracotta Sheet Set | Rose Duvet Cover | Patchwork Quilt | White Diamond Quilted Shams | Extra Pillowcases in Rose Enter look #1! I wanted to introduce some warmth to the space, so I brought in some pink and red tones. Starting with an organic pattern sheet set gave a more eclectic feel from the jump. This one is a limited edition print called ‘Topographic’ and it really does look like map lines. (For what it’s worth, I used the bundle set to order all of these because it knocks down the price, but things are also available a la carte.) Terracotta Sheet Set | Rose Duvet Cover | Patchwork Quilt | White Diamond Quilted Shams | Extra Pillowcases in Rose I layered with a truly chic geometric quilt, which brought in the black of the rug (a gift from Emily), and topped it all with some quilted linen shams. The white shams, contrasted with all the pattern and color, definitely took the whole look to a slightly calmer place. Terracotta Sheet Set | Rose Duvet Cover | Patchwork Quilt | White Diamond Quilted Shams | Extra Pillowcases in Rose I moved in some antique mismatched nightstands to give my signature granny look. Added a pair of 1920s deco art and BOOM! we were in a whole new lane. This is much more in line with the rest of my place but my concern is that I am straying away from a more minimal room, which is something I am looking for where I rest my head. But since I love the pattern mixing and color palette here, I’ll probably paint the room the lightest shade of blush to warm it up, swap the rug for something sleeker and more contemporary, and get a pair of modern lamps to bridge the geometric quilt and my apartment’s natural Deco detailing. It’d be quiet, lightly colorful minimalism with hits of black and vintage accents, which would be pretty soothing. Option 2: Sophisticated & MoodySolid White Sheet Set | Graphite & Steel Oxford Stripe Duvet Cover | Charcoal Diamond Linen Quilt | Extra Pillowcases in Graphite Next up in the group is my sophisticated moody option. Now I have always loved anything fancy and most definitely have a flair for the dramatic, making look #2 a real serious contender. High contrast is the name of the game and keeping things neat will always be easy on the eyes. Solid White Sheet Set | Graphite & Steel Oxford Stripe Duvet Cover | Charcoal Diamond Linen Quilt | Extra Pillowcases in Graphite I fell in love with this thin stripe duvet cover that feels super dapper. I then alternated from dark to light, adding crisp white sheets, then charcoal pillowcases, then white pillowcases. I really liked using these pillowcases in particular because they all come with an envelope closure, which keeps them looking really neat and full and tidy. Honestly though, the best part of this ensemble is the black linen lightweight quilt folded at the foot. The quality is pure heaven. As I am writing this post I’m literally wrapped in it. Solid White Sheet Set | Graphite & Steel Oxford Stripe Duvet Cover | Charcoal Diamond Linen Quilt | Extra Pillowcases in Graphite Rounding out the rest of the room, I had a woodworking friend whip up some basic nightstands stained black. I dug through my vast collection of black and white sketches and voila! I had double-downed on the classy. This option really feels the most elevated, but I am wondering if the moodiness is too much with my current styling. I want to feel light as a feather when I wake up. If we go this route, I would most definitely change the curtains to a vivid white gauzy linen to lighten the space, and switch the art to something more white and minimal, like a set of line drawings. It would make the bed the star. (Emily note: or should we go super dark??? Should we make Erik paint his room black??? Vote in the comments!!) Option 3: Pattern PlayGraphite Grid Sheet Set | Window Pane Duvet Cover | Black Graham Lightweight Shams | Extra Pillowcases in Smoke Stripe Last but certainly not least is our pattern play moment. I have always been an advocate for all white beds. It feels like a hotel, will never go out of style, and they are very easy to keep clean and bright (with a little help from bleach). A great way to keep neutral beds visually interesting is to mix in a little texture and a lot of pattern. Look #3 works so well because of how the patterns are layered in. Graphite Grid Sheet Set | Window Pane Duvet Cover | Black Graham Lightweight Shams | Extra Pillowcases in Smoke Stripe I started with the smallest pattern as my foundation, knowing that would be the busiest. This is a good rule of thumb for mixing patterns on bedding (it’s also what I did with look #1). I really liked how deep the fitted sheet is – it’s 15″ which means that it stays firmly in place (no snapping up in the middle of the night) and you can easily pull it taut which is great for patterns like this. Then, I went for a medium scale on the pillows – simple horizontal lines for my pillowcases, and adding some texture with the ticking stitch shams. Finishing it off with the largest scale print on top is this fabulous grid stripe. They all play well together because they are all in the same color story, but are all different sizes. (Emily note: This is actually the sheet/duvet setup I have for my bed! Now eyeballing those shams, though…) Graphite Grid Sheet Set | Window Pane Duvet Cover | Black Graham Lightweight Shams | Extra Pillowcases in Smoke Stripe I painted some vintage nightstands a creme color to mix up the white and hung a vintage black and white poster to connect back to the black rug. Just like that, I had a room that was both tranquil and detailed. This look really has longevity and can easily grow with my evolving makeover…nevertheless I don’t want to play anything too safe. Design should be frisky! Which is why if I went for this one, I would eliminate the majority of the black and warm tones – the rug, the curtains, the nightstands, the pedestal. I’d probably get a white shag rug, white curtains, white nightstands. And then I’d be bringing in pops of color in the accessories to keep it saucy. Multi-colored art, a pink throw, blue lamps, etc. Henley | Half-Zip Sweatshirt | Tailored Sweatpant So as I was pulling all these fabulous bedding options, I also decided to add some loungewear to my cart just for fun. This post is not supposed to be about my sweatsuit, buuuuuuut… insanely soft and cleanly tailored, I struck couch potato gold with these babies. I obviously had to wear them for my pics for the post because why NOT go all the way in Brooklinen head to toe (to bed)?? Henley | Half-Zip Sweatshirt | Tailored Sweatpant I have worn them for the last 4 days to everything from my afternoon walks, to my marathon of Gilmore Girls, to my two martini happy hour before dinner. Nothing feels as wonderful as cocktails and an elastic waist. Run, don’t walk, to grab these staples for the upcoming colder months. They are THAT good that they deserved a section of the post. (Maybe a great gift? They also come in ladies’ sizes.) ANYWAY. Back to business. My bedding dilemma. So with all that on the table I need your help! This decision will affect the rest of my new and improved bedroom. Are you obsessed with the color and collected feel of look #1? Are you freaking out over the dark and refined moment of look #2? Or is the luminous mixed prints of look #3 sending you over the edge? Weigh in now so I can get to steppin’ on the rest of my boudoir! I have nothing but time on my hands these days and a stiff drink can only sustain me for so long. Cheers! Emily here to close this out – I am very excited to see where this MOTO takes us. An all-blush tonal deco/modern mashup? A high-contrast black and white and graphic space? Or a light, bright, white space with pops of saturated and playful color? So many options. What say you??? As always, thank you to Brooklinen for sending us some bedding to play with and for indulging our crazy post ideas – remember, everything is 20% off this weekend (including my favorite duvet insert! I can’t talk this thing up enough!) – and thanks to YOU for joining us here today and for supporting the brands who support this blog. Have a happy and safe weekend. Originally from Emily Henderson https://ift.tt/33jmIKW Happy Thanksgiving (And How Birdie and I Decorated For Our Last-Minute Thanksgiving Dinner)11/25/2020 Like many people, our usual thanksgiving was canceled. We’ve done the last 20 years at Brian’s parent’s house in Sacramento with all the cousins, aunts, uncles and it’s the ONLY time of year that we all get together and it’s an EXTREMELY fun day. Like epically fun. But 30 people, from 8 different households (and a few college students) wasn’t a great/safe idea this year. So a couple of months ago we all decided to cancel but planned on still going up and having it be super small – just us, Brian’s brother, and his parents. But two weeks ago, heeding all the warnings, especially with the crazy spike we decided even that was risky. So instead we are having a very small family thanksgiving here, which is totally fine and worth the non-risk. I want it to feel at least a little bit special, so Birdie and I planned out how we would set the table, and she really wanted to help and even make things for it. I was in heaven. It was the first real time that she and I collaborated on how something should be styled, and I let her really take the lead (while guiding her towards certain things obviously). Here’s how it turned out: Sherpa | Vintage Fabric Table Cloth (similar) | Candle Holder| Candles | Vase (similar) | Wine Glass | Water Glass | Flatware | Placemats | Plates | Oversized Stripe Pillow | Sherpa Pillows | Faux Fur Lumbar Pillow | Wood Garland | Napkins She took it so seriously, it took 3 hours of our undivided attention and it was so fun I can’t even tell you. This girl loves to ‘help’ more than I thought possible for a kid. And not for like just 10 minutes, she FINISHES the job (even with cooking she is so invested). I taught her where everything goes, how to fold napkins, and even how to stand back and look at it all together and edit. At one point she said ‘mama, I think there is too much going on’ and she was RIGHT. We used what we had on hand and it turned out pretty darn cute. I think when you collect a certain style of stuff for a certain style of house it can just look good together when thrown on the same table. I’ve been hoarding vintage plaid (this Japanese fabric is from Etsy) for a long time so I threw that down as the tablecloth which feels super cozy (even though it’s very ripped) and “fall” in a fun way. The leather chargers I’ve had for a couple of years (from Target) and the plates and flatware are our Made by Design everyday dinner plates. Of course, I wanted to buy some more handmade stoneware plates (and salad plates) but we don’t need or want them post-thanksgiving, so these white ones will do just fine (plus they are so lightweight and easy to wash in the dishwasher). And then we foraged for fall leaves and branches for each place setting and the centerpiece which was VERY “fall.” My Dress | Birdie’s Dress (unavailable) I had these cute little tags that Birdie wanted to use as place cards (not that we needed them) and she wrote all our names and even a little drawing of ‘thanksgiving’ (turkey, leaf, heart, etc). They were SO CUTE. We threw on some candles (Birdie made the pillar that is wrapped in leaves and twine) and I already had those colorful tapers, in these candle holders I bought last year. Now here’s a photo a little farther back so you can really get the whole picture of what it looks like: It was VERY thrown together and no, Sara did not come to professionally shoot this (and I tried hard not to care too much about the styling being perfect), hence the slightly crooked candles. Or maybe it’s the new way to achieve the “organic, effortless, thrown-together” kind of look we had no choice but to go for since it was so last minute. Here’s another angle with (slightly) straighter candles: All in all, Birdie was so proud of it that she wanted to get photos “for my portfolio” (I DIED WHEN SHE SAID THAT) so we went ahead and set the whole table so we could take better photos. I want to permanently bottle up and save forever the pride that she exuded, and I’ll start by framing one of these photos… It’s a different thanksgiving this year and I know there are a lot of mixed feelings out there. Our household hopes that you are all staying safe, cozy, and filling your day however you want. Cooking or not, family or not, hopefully next year we can have an EPIC family thanksgiving in a safer world. xx For more info & resources on our dining nook (or if you want to see it styled out for everyday) click on this post Design by Emily and Elliot Henderson:) The post Happy Thanksgiving (And How Birdie and I Decorated For Our Last-Minute Thanksgiving Dinner) appeared first on Emily Henderson. Originally from Emily Henderson https://ift.tt/3m5CiRW If you are like me right now you are chanting “I will not bring more garbage into my house, I will not bring more garbage into my house” followed quickly by, “I will not spoil my kids this year. I will not spoil my kids this year. I will not spoil my kids this year”. While I can’t control grandparents (can’t I?) I can control what we buy and bring into our home. I will be intentional. I will not buy them stuff they don’t need, won’t play with, or will just turn into a landfill. I PROMISE (I’m lecturing myself in hopes of prevention). Also, we won’t buy A LOT. We made that mistake two years ago and it was the most disgusting ‘present exhaustion’ where they would yell ‘NEXT PRESENT!’ Rip it open, react, then impatiently wait for their turn again and we realized that we are officially terrible parents. No, that will not happen this year. NO WAY. So this list is a bunch of stuff that I’ve either given them in the past and they’ve loved or I’m considering giving them this year (and hopefully they’ll love and use for years). More discussion about parenting during Christmas at the end for those of you interested Let’s dive in. 1. Meri Meri Cape & Wand Iridescent Sequin | 2. Kitty Stuffed Animal Adoption Set | 3. Superhero Smartphone Movie Kit | 4. Tiger Tribe Beat The Clock Stopwatch Set | 5. Jetpack Backpack | 6. Kids Code Electronic Piggy Banks 1. Meri Meri Cape & Wand Iridescent Sequin: We do a lot of dress up here (like a lot) and Birdie doesn’t tire of wearing anything sequin or princess-y. A cape is a small addition to this very fun activity. Not every present can be educational, but I know she’ll love this one. 1. Walking Dino Kit | 2. PicassoTiles 60 Piece Set 60pcs Magnet Building Tiles | 3. Natural Log Wooden Toy Building Blocks | 4. Beetle – Giant Lady | 5. Color Puzzle | 6. Big Wood-Like Blocks 1. Walking Dino Kit: These dinosaurs are robotic!! You build it, and then you can move it. I’m very tempted to get Charlie this. 1. Augmented Reality Interactive Globe For Kids | 2. Fractions Learning Kit | 3. Montessori Anatomy Vest 1. Augmented Reality Interactive Globe For Kids: I want to get this, but Brian is afraid they’ll get over it fast. It’s an education app that gives them a lot of info on each region. I know my kids will like it if it’s good. 1. Little Talk – Conversation Card Deck | 2. Electricity Experiment Kit | 3. Magic of Science Experiment Kit 1. Little Talk – Conversation Card Deck: Everyone is talking about this conversational prompting game. Of course, you could just do it on your own, but I know from experience that when it’s packaged and looks like a game they engage with it more. 1. Crazy Forts | 2. Peaceable Kingdom Race to the Treasure! | 3. Peaceable Kingdom/ Gnomes at Night | 4. Outfoxed! | 5. Gravity Maze Marble Run Brain Game | 6. Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza 1. Crazy Forts: We bought a family fort making kit 3 years ago for Christmas and it did get some heavy play but it was also pretty expensive and cumbersome. This one is cheaper and looks easier to put together for the kids to do alone (we still have ours and aren’t replacing it but I would buy this one instead if I needed one). 1. Kid’s Classic Banjo | 2. Loog Guitar | 3. Kid’s Classic Drum Set 1. Kid’s Classic Banjo Isn’t this the cutest, banjo ever? 1. Emma, the Sperm Whale | 2. DIY Sewing Kit “Make Your Monster” | 3. Ty Beanie Boos PIXY | 4. Handmade Crochet Stuffed Bunny | 5. Gilles le Koala | 6. Crochet Solar System Toys 1. Emma, the Sperm Whale: This stuffy is more for you/their room than them. I have the sloth and alligator version in their room in LA and they are SO GOOD. They aren’t cozy, but they’re handmade, whimsical, and huge. 1. Mono Mama | 2. Handmade Keepsake Doll | 3. Pirate Paper Doll 1. Mono Mama: Another stuffie we have that looks GREAT in their room. 1. Ask Magazine Subscription | 2. Children’s Favorites with Mickey And Pals | 3. Kids National Geographic Subscription | 4. Lego Magazine Subscription | 5. Honest History Magazine Subscription| 6. A Charlie Brown Christmas Now those magazines 1, 3, 4, and 5 – are all subscription-based. We have found that those (as well as Kiwi Crates) are an awesome monthly surprise. Our kids get so excited when they arrive and we usually dive in and read and do all the activities. I’m especially excited about ‘Honest History’. Brian upgraded his record player recently, so we put his old one up in the attic with some vintage Disney, a Christmas Carol Story, and music records with it. They will play up there and listen to records for much longer than we could have imagined (sometimes 2 hours will go by). So we are getting them more records for their collection. You could also just have an MP3 player or Alexa but there is something sweet about them going so analog. 1. Household Recycling Toy Kits | 2. Young Engineers Set | 3. Bavarian Toy Crossbows 1. Household Recycling Toy Kits: This kit helps you take all that recycled stuff you’ve been saving and turn it into motorized robots and cars!! This is definitely something we want to get for all of us to do. 1. 5-Star Little Climber | 2. Balance Bike | 3. Magni Classic Racer | 4. Archery Wooden Set | 5. Indoor Snowball Fight | 6. Build A Snowman Kit 1. 5-Star Little Climber: For those with toddlers (grand-toddlers) I love these Montessori style jungle gyms for how flexible they are AND pretty. There are a lot on Etsy to choose from and might make a winter inside a bit more fun. 1. Gingham Coat | 2. Leather Boots | 3. Wash-Off Nail Polish Set 1. Gingham Coat: Birdie’s new coat is SO CUTE on her, and would make a great holiday coat (and year-round). Size down, her’s is a bit big (got a 5-6). 1. Inflatable Snow Tube | 2. Inflatable Snowmobile Sled | 3. Inflatable Toboggan We are a sledding family (it snows a lot up here and we have amazing sledding hills near our house). I’m debating between these three but they are all so cute!!! Bu-bye plastic cheap sleds that break! 1. Yoto Player – Kids Audio Player | 2. Bluetooth 5.0 MP3 | 3. Crosley Voyager Bluetooth Record Player 1. Yoto Player – Kids Audio Player: Brian bought this for the kids a few months ago – it’s a storytelling machine, with different cards that have different stories. Our kids go in phases, sometimes they LOVE it and some stories they skip. We also like that it has a nightime clock on it. 1. The Story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg: A Biography Book for New Readers | 2. Antiracist Baby Board Book | 3. How To Spot An Artist | 4. Oh So Kind! 1. The Story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg: A Biography Book for New Readers: Charlie and I recently read this book cover to cover on the hammock and it’s really digestible for kids. What I love about it is that at the end there are questions for them to help their comprehension and retention. It’s definitely more on the educational side (and we have the Obama and MLK versions, too) but for an early ready it is GREAT (especially for home school). 1. Ruth Bader Ginsburg Short Sleeve Trailblazer Tee | 2. DP Tee Obama White | 3. Rosa Parks Trailblazer T-Shirt I want all of these FOR ME. The Obama one comes as RBG version as well (and as a baby onesie) and there are many others in the series like 1 and 3. So awesome. Great for prompting conversation, learning, supporting these designers, and representing. 1. Really RAD Robots MiBRO | 2. Montessori Toddler Busy Board | 3. Melissa & Doug On the Go Water Wow! 1. Really RAD Robots MiBRO: This cute robot can be programmed to do a lot of fun things via remote. I’m going to read more reviews, but it seems so much fun (can even go pick things up and bring them back). 1. Wood Carousel Music Box | 2. Sailing Ship Kite Large Ghost Ship | 3. Green Toys Submarine 1. Wood Carousel Music Box: I audibly gasped when I saw this handmade custom music box. I’m going to have our kids each pick out one, and personalize with their name and year. They are splurgy but handmade, so sweet, a great collectible, and supports a small maker. 1. Leanne Ford Motorcycle Ride On | 2. Gray Striped Baby Swing | 3. Wild Baby Elephant Stuffed Animal 1. Leanne Ford Motorcycle Ride On: I would NOT be upset if this wood motorcycle was next to the tree with a big bow on it Christmas morning. We don’t need it (and we still have that adorable Monroe Workshop rocking horse that gets 10 minutes of use a week), but Leanne Ford, you are SO GOOD. So that’s what I pinned for kids this year. It’s just so hard to know what they’ll love and use! Our kids mostly just love legos/building things and markers/art so we have to control our desire to shake things up or buy the latest thing that seems “fun”. Last year we TOTALLY blew it. Charlie wanted ‘battle bots‘ (on Brian’s prompting) and Birdie said she wanted a baby and stroller so I latched on to that and got her this one from PB kids. They were both from Santa and their big gifts. The Battle Bots got a decent amount of use the first week but it was SO LOUD AND ANNOYING AND AGRESSIVE, SO MANY PARTS all over the place and he hasn’t touched it in months and months. I recently packed it in a box hoping to rotate it back in later, but it feels like a waste. Birdie changed the baby “Butterfly’s” diaper a few times, adorably fed her with a bottle, tucked her in a few nights in a row which was obviously painfully cute, but then she got bored and abandoned her child. Recently as I was purging I asked if we could give it (with carriage, diaper bag, the works – perfect condition) to our 2-year-old neighbor daughter and she happily said yes, and you know how rarely that happens so she clearly was over it. Any advice on this would just be lovely. They are at an age where I feel like we really need to set up how we do this. Are they old enough to start using their chore money to buy us presents? Grandparents? Should put together a toy exchange or have them save to buy toys for underserved kids? Make presents for friends/family? What are your present traditions? How do you guys prevent the overconsumption? The accrual of garbage? And also we are SO close to Charlie asking us point blank about Santa and I’m refusing to lie…. EEEEEKKKKKK This is my last personal gift guide, y’all (well, besides some more thoughtful ones in a few weeks). Hopefully, it helped you find some things you feel good about in time for the sales this week and weekend. We’ll have a big Black Friday roundup with a lot of our best home and fashion picks from our guides on huge sales. I’m hoping to be done with all of mine by Sunday so that box can be checked and we can get to our month of baking, ornament making, and watching SO MANY HOLIDAY MOVIES. Expect a holiday movie review post in your future. For ALL of the gift guides head HERE! Originally from Emily Henderson https://ift.tt/2HypVP8 HAPPY TUESDAY, FRIENDS. I’m so thrilled with today’s post and so glad you’re here! Let’s catch up: earlier this month, we convinced our dear friends at Lulu and Georgia to loan us a tiny truck with a few of our favorite picks from their site. Our pitch: We wanted to show how you can make big changes to the feel of a room with just a few tiny tweaks. We grabbed one of our all-time favorite sectionals to serve as a base, enlisted the help of Emily Bowser, a site-favorite EHD alum, and then shot three TOTALLY different looks. Once we finished, Bowser and I spent nearly 8 hours on Zoom as I pored over the photos and asked her every question in the book: Why does this vignette work? Why did you use a black tray instead of a white tray? How did you plan this pillow combo? Below, you’ll find a ton of knowledge, some beautiful inspo, and some very sweet cat photos. (Also, honest reviews of the product we borrowed for the shoot – Lulu and Georgia’s Black Friday sale (25% off sitewide) is on now and there are a few things we loved, wish we had kept, and wholeheartedly recommend.) LET’S GET IT POPPING, OKAY? Textured + RelaxedBoucle Swivel Chair | Round Side Table | Cutout Bowl | Striped Rug | Round Coffee Table | Sectional Sofa | Semicircle Side Table Caitlin: I love this take on your living room! It looks so natural with everything you already had (ie everything on the walls and ceiling). But can we just jump in by talking about this end table doing double duty as a drink cart? I feel like in corners, I usually see plants…and…chairs? I don’t think I’ve seen a ton of corners styled out with end tables. Bowser: Well, I needed something in the corner, and this felt like a nice hit of black that spoke to the rug. As a cat owner, I need to keep my plants in the air. And I think that a chair over there would feel too big with the scale of the chaise, so it’s a nice little place for a vintage tea set up. The tiered levels are great, too. I mean, what that bowl is actually doing right now is hiding my wifi router behind it. But this table was a good, chunky size – the size of a small bar cart, so it was perfect for a beverage area. Caitlin: So usually on the blog, I’ve read Em talking about threes – and you have that on the coffee table with your vase, books, and catchall – but there’s only two things on the end table next to the sofa. Why does that work in this instance? Bowser: I think it’s because the vase is so particular and odd. Special. It’s already a statement. I think if you wanted to do a third thing, it’d have to be smaller than the tray, which would be SO TINY, or bigger than the vase, which feels like it would crowd the side table. There are also already stacks of books underneath, so in a way, it is three. You can’t really tell either, but the glass is tinted, which is nice. Sectional Sofa | Moss Linen Boucle Pillow | Lumbar Pillow | Indigo Pillow | Printed Throw | Semicircle Side Table | Marble Catchall | Black and White Rug Caitlin: Ooooh, yeah, I thought I was getting a tiny hit of tint. And AH, cute, tiny, cappuccino cup in the close up shots! That’s such a sweet middle ground. Bowser: Yeah, the tint is great because it doesn’t show fingerprints as much. I love a glass coffee table – I have one – but I have to clean it all the time so know that going in. The bottom on this end table is marble, and I think it’s real because it’s REALLY heavy. It feels stable, like it’s not going to fall over on you. Caitlin: How did you land on these pillows? You’re mixing rust, green, and blue – and obviously they’re tonal – but what in your stylist brain made you put these all together? Why do they look so good? Bowser: First off, I loved the rust pillow in the left corner. I also loved the greenish ones – they were especially very comfy. A lot of times we work with pillows that you don’t really want to lay on because they’re more scratchy or decorative, but I ended up using these in every set up because they’re neutral but also felt like a color. But something that surprised me a little here, more than the color mixing, which works because they all could kind of pull as neutrals – is that I could mix in blue with black. Even though that pillow is indigo, it’s dark enough that it still gives you the general feeling of a hit of black that echoes throughout the space. Same thing with the throw – it’s dark blue – and the rug is black and white, but they still work together. That rug was actually a lot less statement-y than I anticipated. From picking it on the website to seeing it in person – I was pleasantly surprised that it was actually a little more chilled out. Sectional Sofa | Black Tray | Printed Throw | Moss Linen Boucle Pillow | Rust Pillow | Lumbar Pillow | Round Coffee Table | Black and White Rug Caitlin: Can we talk about this tray/chaise situation? This looks SO GOOD. Spatially, can you walk me through where on the chaise to put your tray? Like, is there a formula or ratio? Bowser: I actually didn’t think about it like that – I thought about it more as a tool to break up the pattern of the blanket. The good thing about a tray is that you can – and should – move it to wherever you’re sitting. It’s a nice substitute for an end table. But instead of worrying about placement, maybe think about what looks best to your eye when it’s layered. Caitlin: Since we’re talking about blankets…how did you decide on this throw placement? Why go this casual, thrown route instead of a more precise, across-the-chaise fold that we see around here so often? Bowser: I think that’s cute sometimes! But this looks more organic, and it’s also nice for sanity. When we make things too neat and then you sit on them, it can be kind of anxiety-inducing to have to fix it every time. I think this styling, in general, also just feels more natural – you have the olive branches and rattan – so I don’t know if a precise fold would have been a little too formal. Also, depending on the size of the throw, a toss like this can make it feel bigger because you’re not clearly defining its borders by folding it up. Stoneware Pitcher | Boucle Swivel Chair | Striped Rug | Round Coffee Table | Sectional Sofa Caitlin: The scale of this table looks great. And is that a pitcher on top? I love how farmhouse and classic it feels on top of such an organic rattan top. Bowser: That coffee table is BIG – bigger than it looks here because the couch was so massive (127″!) that it can dwarf a lot of things – but this table is an awesome large choice (especially if you have kids). It’s not heavy and you’re not gonna hit your head on it. It was also nicely flat, as I sometimes have problems with tables like this being too dome-y. The pitcher is also REALLY nice. I would have kept this. It is a nice textural difference, too – smooth ceramic, organic woods, the raised stripe on the rug, the boucle chair – it’s a good balance. Caitlin: The sectional also looks so good in the corner. Were you ever worried about it overwhelming the space? Bowser: There was SO MUCH SEATING. It surprised me that a room as small as mine is – it really only fits an 8 x 10 rug – could comfortably fit something so big. I mean, right now, I have a side table and a standing lamp in that corner, and in a way, it’s a dead space. But I think that since this sectional is white and there’s space underneath, it’s not imposing or too big for the space. It just worked. Saturated + BoldGlass Coffee Table | Striped Rug | Sectional Sofa | Striped Black Pillow | Round Velvet Pillow | Moss Linen Boucle Pillow | Round Side Table | Marble Catchall Caitlin: Can we talk about this incredible rug? Bowser: I mean, this rug is SO FUN and versatile. I’ve worked with this rug before. The stripes aren’t too orange, and the lighter ones have a little something to them – I don’t know if I’d describe it as a light pink, but it’s not a stark white. Caitlin: Is ‘cream’ the word you’re looking for? Bowser: AH. Yes. Cream. Caitlin: But wait – that’s the boucle pillow from the first look, right? And that’s the striped pillow that you used in the next look, too. You really mixed and matched!! Bowser: Sometimes, it’s just nice to have these solid base pillows, especially if you’re the type of person who likes to change up your space. I think a lot of the time we hear about changing your pillows, but I don’t think people realize that you don’t always need to change every single one. Caitlin: It’s like a capsule wardrobe!!! Like, there aren’t a ton of major changes – you only had one sofa, 3 blankets, and a few pillows, but the vibe of each of these are so different. Bowser: I guess the only other thing I’d note is that when you’re styling with pillows, you want to consider the scale and shape. You don’t have to, but it’s nice if at least one of them can be a different shape, like a lumbar or a circle…or even a bigger euro-sized pillow in the back. Blush Mohair Throw | Slate Hand-loomed Pillow | Orange Velvet Pillow | Moss Lumbar Pillow | White Tray | Candle Holder | Striped Black Pillow | Round Velvet Pillow | Moss Linen Boucle Pillow Bowser: Now this coffee table, the glass one, is a very decent size. I really liked the corners of it. They kind of extend and they’re squared. A glass coffee table is great if you have a patterned rug that you don’t want to cover up, which is why I used it here. The rug had a really bold pattern and brought a lot of color that I wanted to highlight. I have a glass coffee table for that reason. Caitlin: Does having such a graphic base inform any of your other decisions? Bowser: Since the rug is more modern, the circle pillow and the velvet feels more appropriate with it. Saturated colors feel more appropriate. And you’re right – it’s not just because of the color, but because of the pattern. Caitlin: So wait – why white tray instead of black tray here? Would it feel too heavy? Bowser: I think it would have felt a little heavy, but maybe more than that, I feel like it would have been a black hole. I also think the colors pop more on the white. Glass Coffee Table | Striped Rug | Sectional Sofa | Striped Black Pillow | Round Velvet Pillow | Moss Linen Boucle Pillow | Round Side Table | Marble Catchall Caitlin: This vignette is so good. The purple florals are also such a nice touch in contrast with the vase, which looks SO GOOD with the pillow. It’s all really saturated and jewel-toned and pretty without being loud. HOW??? Bowser: When you’re a stylist – and I’m not really a hoard-y type of person, most of the things in my house have purpose or meaning – but there are also just things that are pretty, like a bowl full of beads. But for the flowers…it was an interesting choice, because it was purple with orange. I’m not a flower arranger, I’m a ‘stuff things in a vase’ person, and these just fell really nicely. More importantly, though, while there are some flowers out there that are black, oftentimes a dark purple is the best choice if you’re looking for a plant that’s a little higher impact. I wanted to see the green of the stems and the richness of some color. Blush Mohair Throw | Slate Hand-loomed Pillow | Orange Velvet Pillow | Moss Lumbar Pillow | White Tray | Candle Holder | Striped Rug | Sectional Sofa Caitlin: This table vignette was one of my favorite things from the shoot. What were you thinking about when you were pulling it together? Bowser: Something you do find a lot is that you want to mix up shapes – you don’t want 15 circles. But sometimes it does happen that way, like on this coffee table – pretty circular tray, circular mug, circular candles – but what’s inside each of them are VERY different things. Like, liquid and fire and plants. They’re different elements. Caitlin: I feel like this is going to be SO HELPFUL for folks who want to play around with things that they already have on hand, but who maybe feel stuck in figuring out why certain vignettes aren’t working in the same way that they see on the blog every day. I also think that hearing you break it down like this has made it a little more clear about what I’ve been missing before, if that makes sense? Bowser: YAY. So like, here, to go even deeper, one is kind of tall and skinny, one is going out more horizontally like this (gesticulating wildly, imitating…flowers?), and one is contained. So we’re repeating shapes, but the contents are so varied that it’s still interesting. Plus, the flowers and candlestick speak to each other because they’re similar colors. So like, usually it would bother me a little bit that there are 3 circular things and I’d think, ‘oh, give me a rectangle,’ but the contents make it really special. Blush Mohair Throw | Slate Hand-loomed Pillow | Orange Velvet Pillow | Moss Lumbar Pillow | White Tray | Candle Holder | Striped Black Pillow | Round Velvet Pillow | Moss Linen Boucle Pillow Caitlin: Lastly, can you walk me through the pillow picks here? I think that I historically have matched my pillows on both sides of the sofa, despite knowing that’s not maybe not super on-trend. How did you plan these? Bowser: Well, in this case, none of the pillows are the same. I actually usually like at least one of the pillows to be the same! But let’s look at this more: the lumbar pillow on the left and the back square pillow on the right speak to each other. They’re not the same – they’re even slightly different colors – but they’re similar enough. And then the orange two obviously speak to each other, despite being different shapes. Sectionals are HARD for throw pillows. This one was easier, because you can just throw a blanket at the end of the chaise, but true sectionals (with no chaise) get tricky. Blush Mohair Throw | Slate Hand-loomed Pillow | Orange Velvet Pillow | Moss Lumbar Pillow | White Tray | Candle Holder | Sectional Sofa Caitlin: It makes me feel better to hear that this gets challenging even for pros. Why did you go with the pink throw at the end of the chaise instead of one of your other options? Pink, rust, and green feel very on trend right now. To me, this feels like a millennial’s living room. True NeutralOval Coffee Table | Black Tray | White Circle Vase | White Vase | Gray Mohair Throw | Earthy Stripe Rug | Striped Black Pillow | Mustard Boucle Pillow | Striped Lumbar Pillow Caitlin: Starting it out – this rug feels kind of similar to the previous rug in that they’re both striped in a similar color palette. What’s the big difference to your eye? Bowser: So this one is a little bit more brown, and obviously the other is a little bit more orange, so I just ended up going WAY more neutral with the styling here. I could have also used the rattan coffee table here, but this is the famous Emily table! I love a coffee table that’s not a rectangle. Ovals are usually the most versatile. Generally – and I mean, it depends – couches are more squared, so when you’re looking at a space, you want to think about differing your textures and differing your shapes. Here, the sofa is a rectangle, the chaise is a rectangle, the rug is a rectangle, the room is a rectangle – it just gives a different flow. So I do love this coffee table – the white top, the wood bottom, the black iron legs. It’s versatile, a good size, and a good shape. There’s a lot of styling capabilities. I get why Em picked it for her own home. Oval Coffee Table | Gray Mohair Throw | Earthy Stripe Rug | Striped Black Pillow | Textured Pillow | Striped Lumbar Pillow | Mustard Bolster Pillow | Wood End Table | Earthy Stripe Rug Caitlin: So, my not-stylist math brain is looking at this and thinking that the white top looks good with the art and the black legs look good with the other hits of black in the space. Do you ever think about that when planning your spaces? Bowser: Right right. So even though this was a neutral story, it was okay to roll with a black tray here because there’s the black legs, the black sconces, the black frames, the black in the pillows. If I had used the white tray here instead, it may have felt a little weird or disconnected. You don’t always need to change everything – you just need to find a way to pull the elements together. Caitlin: I see. So like, this is how you made California Cool work for your house as-is without having to change everything in the space? Bowser: Exactly. In this case, figuring out how to make it work meant that I could flip the coffee table and the tray without worrying about it clashing with the things I didn’t want to change. There’s a little bit more contrast than a typical “California Cool” room, but it makes sense for the way that we actually live. Gray Mohair Throw | Textured Pillow | Striped Lumbar Pillow | Mustard Bolster Pillow | Wood End Table | Marble Catchall Caitlin: UNEXPECTED MINIMAL STYLING MOMENT. Let’s talk about it, yeah? Just matchbooks and flowers, but it still looks considered! Bowser: There’s a backstory to these matchbooks, actually. One year for Christmas we did an EHD White Elephant and we had to bring things from our own homes, so we had to find things we didn’t use anymore. Sara brought matchbooks and we were laughing because her apartment had just burned down and she brought a whole bowl of matchbooks. Caitlin: Sara framed matchbooks for me last Christmas too!!! Bowser: It is a stylist thing. We collect matchbooks. Vintage matchbooks. I think it’s because they feel like they have a story to them – they’re used, or from places that don’t exist anymore, or they’re from the 70s, and they have fun designs. They’re fun to look at. It’s weird – you don’t really want to use the matchbooks. I mean, I guess if I was in a really tough spot, at least I’d know I have them? But I also have the famous framed matchbooks that I did for the Atlanta project. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. The ‘Head East’ one on top is so cool. If you’re traveling, bring one home from a place that you go. It’s nostalgic and special. Caitlin: Putting on my reader hat – I like this side table vignette a lot because it feels ACHIEVABLE. You have a vessel and a bowl. I guess that’s two vessels? Anyway, what makes this look finished and polished? You know, beyond just telling people to get plants and get matchbooks.” Bowser: So these are both kind of circular, and they speak to each other in that way. I like that one of the vessels is totally smooth and round and the other is octagonal. That’s the right shape, right? It’s nice to bring in some angles to break things up. Sectional Sofa | Oval Coffee Table | Black Tray | White Circle Vase | White Vase | Gray Mohair Throw | Earthy Stripe Rug | Striped Black Pillow | Mustard Boucle Pillow | Striped Lumbar Pillow Caitlin: VERY INTO this tall grass. Is this the same pitcher from the first look? Bowser: It is not the same pitcher – it’s a super tall vessel. Behind the pampas grass there’s actually a handle wrapped in rattan. Pampas is very recently in vogue and it’s kind of a pain in the ass, but I recently learned that you can spray them with hairspray and they won’t shed. It’s nice to have something that you can just leave out instead of having to get new things all the time. I also really like these trays. They’re a nice, big size – they’re hard to come by at this scale. It has a nice lip, a nice handle, and they’re versatile. 10/10. Oval Coffee Table | Black Tray | White Circle Vase | White Vase | Gray Mohair Throw | Earthy Stripe Rug | Striped Black Pillow | Mustard Boucle Pillow | Striped Lumbar Pillow Caitlin: OK, here’s where I’m stuck. You have this cool-toned throw and these warm-toned pillows – including a mustard one on the other end of the sofa – but they still look great together. I feel like I’ve tried to give this type of neutral-mixing a go before in a past apartment when I pulled a warm antique rug with a really cool gray sofa, but it just looked a little off. SOS?” Bowser: People should be a little less scared of mixing cool and warm tones. It’d be one thing if I was trying to mix a jewel tone or a warm yellow with a cool blue, but these are all still true neutrals. It’s about the undertones. The couch was also a great backdrop. It wasn’t a warm white, and the coffee table is a bright, cool white, so it’s not that stark in comparison either. It ended up being a really good canvas. I think sometimes pieces can get lost in a white-on-white scenario, but this is a great mid-toned backdrop. A Corner Cat BonusBoucle Swivel Chair | Blush Mohair Throw | Round Velvet Pillow | Striped Rug | Semicircle Side Table Caitlin: BREAK DOWN THIS VIGNETTE WITH ME. It is so cozy! And clearly, Daffy loves it Bowser: The chair was actually very comfortable AND it was a swivel. It would actually be something that I would keep. I also didn’t find my cats were that interested in it – like, they liked to lay on it, but weren’t trying to tear it up, which is rare for boucle. For the pillow, I liked the size and scale alongside the curved back of the chair. I really like how this end table is pretty versatile – it fits against a couch, but it’s also great against a wall in a tight space. It’s great for a corner chair situation, but it’s really interesting – plus, it’s a lot bigger than a pedestal table. And then for the other selections – I just liked how cozy and bright it felt. AND THERE YOU HAVE IT – a big bunch of stylistic guidance from an all-time favorite alumni, plus a few of our new favorite pieces. THANK YOU to the folks at Lulu and Georgia for loaning us some pieces and for giving us the opportunity to learn AND blog about the findings. Again – their Black Friday sale starts today where the whole site is 25% off if you want to scoop up some goodies for your own holiday refresh (I know. IT’S SO GOOD). And now, I throw it to you…do you have any questions for Bowser? Wanna make any shifts to your space? LET’S CHAT. xx *Styling by Emily Bowser The post All Your Living Room Styling Questions Answered (Plus Some Furniture & Decor Reviews) appeared first on Emily Henderson. Originally from Emily Henderson https://ift.tt/35Ze06o Last week, one of my good friends got a sneak peek of my selections for this post and texted me this: “Your gift guide is just stuff you already have!” And y’all, he wasn’t wrong!!! Today, I am linking up a ton of my tried-and-true favorites – the things that I love and the things that folks comment on when they come over (or, ya know, when they see it in the background of my IG stories). If you have a design-minded friend with hard-to-pin-down taste, I promise that something on this list will appeal to them. (PS. There are a few extra items here that I’m actually hoping for this Christmas…cause you know, when else will I get to publish a gift guide that my mom can read when she’s on the hunt for ideas??? HI, MOM!) 1. Always Pan | 2. Small Pet Set | 3. Carafe | 4. Stoneware Mug | 5. Champagne Coupes | 6. Glass Straws 1. Always Pan: Maybe it’s because I’m a true millennial, but I’m not great at cooking and still not really sure why folks need a whole bunch of pots and pans. This guy is on super sale right now ($95, down from $135 – this never happens, so snatch it up by Cyber Monday!) and it’s so so so good. You can steam and boil water for spaghetti and fry eggs and do other things, too. Plus the colors are SO CUTE – I love it in lavender but I know the rest of the team loves it in sage and spice. 1. Durkow Candles | 2. Shape Party Runner | 3. Volute Candles | 4. Twist Candle 1. Durkow Candles: I know what these look like and I don’t care!!! These are also made and manufactured in Philly. They’re fun, irreverent, and I have a dream to one day have a whole bunch of them in different color variants on my 1930s deco mantle. 1. Personalized Necklace | 2. Circle Ring | 3. Fortune Necklace | 4. Luna Ring 1. Personalized Necklace: I got this after we partnered with ABLE last year for this post. It was customized with a favorite mantra (“suck it up,” hah!), I haven’t taken it off since, and it still looks like new. It’s so hard to find affordable gold-plated jewelry that can stand up to sweat and showers and this fits the bill. SO GOOD. 1. Roller Skates | 2. Animal Medicine Cards | 3. Gradient Puzzle 1. Roller Skates: I’m a competitive figure skater (still, somehow) who hasn’t been on the ice since February – it’s been my longest non-injury break away from a rink in more than 20 years. I saw videos of so many talented folks learning to roller skate this summer and wanted to try but was like “ah, wish I could do that, can’t risk being injured for the season though” but JOKE’S ON ME because there is no competition season for me this year!!! TIME TO PURSUE MY DREAMS. 1. Striped Robe | 2. Bath Sheets | 3. Moccasin Slippers | 4. Weighted Comforter 1. Striped Robe: I’m a lifelong lover of a bold orange/pink/green color scheme (as seen in my childhood bedroom here). Dusen Dusen makes some of my all-time favorite products – I wish my cat would use normal pet beds because I would buy this SO FAST – and I’d love to add an adult, fancy robe to my collection. 1. A Promised Land | 2. Billion Dollar Loser | 3. Evil Geniuses | 4. Subprime Attention Crisis 1. A Promised Land: I LOVE A BOOK FOR CHRISTMAS. And I think my grandpa rubbed off on me because I especially love some nonfiction books for Christmas! (And nonfiction all the time, TBH.) ANYWAY. It’s Obama. Of course I want to read it. 1. Time Traveler | 2. Debt: The First 5,000 Years | 3. How To Do Nothing | 4. Red Comet 1. Time Traveler: The full title of this book is “Time Traveler: A Scientist’s Personal Mission to Make Time Travel a Reality” and THAT SAYS IT ALL. It’s a true story!!! He really tried!!! How have I not read this yet??? 1. Multicolor Marled Socks | 2. Tie-Dye Ankle Socks | 3. Pink Textured Sock | 4. 3-Pack of Socks | 5. Striped Ankle Sock | 6. Grid Ankle Socks 1. Multicolor Marled Socks: As an adult, socks don’t get a fair shake!!! These are all a bit more than I’d usually spend on myself, but that makes them a real treat of a gift. I bought these in blue last year and LOVE THEM. 1. Backpack | 2. Weekender | 3. Inflatable Pillow 1. Backpack: I’ve written before about my love of this backpack. I’ve had it for 2 years, have brought it on over 100 planes, and I’ve used it as a gym bag and it still looks like new. There’s a separate compartment for shoes and so many good (and actually usable) organizational pockets inside. 1000/10, would recommend. AND THERE YOU HAVE IT. The things that people ask about, the things I already love, and a few things I’m hoping to grab this holiday season. What about y’all? What are your go-to gifts for confusing friends? Snacks? Wine? Vases? TELL ME. Maybe we can all help each other!!! For the rest of our 2020 gift guides head HERE! Originally from Emily Henderson https://ift.tt/3kUaD53 This list could be 500 things long, but I tried to keep it to the things that super excite me or are kinda new this year (or I need). While I still maintain wanting to keep life simple and “things” to a minimum, there’s just something about indulging in a little luxury amirite? So if you or someone in your life could also use something beautiful or something to make their skin/body feel better, here ya go. 1. Ranna Gill Ear Loop Face Mask | 2. Sienna Fanny Pack With Stripes | 3. Color Block Pom Beanie | 4. Ciao Trucker Hat
1. Glowscreen SPF 40 | 2. Prose Shampoo & Conditioner | 3. Native Toothpaste | 4. Pixi Glow Mist | 5. Kate Somerville Exfoliating Treatment | 6. Native Deodorant Coconut and Vanilla 1. Glowscreen SPF 40: Hands down my favorite tinted and SPF moisturizer. I’ve gone through 2 bottles since I first discovered it in March and it makes my skin look totally glowy. 1. Mermade Pro Waver | 2. Rosa Nobile Shimmering Body Oil | 3. Le Labo AnOther Massage and Perfuming Oil | 4. St. Tropez Classic Bronzing Mousse 1. Mermade Pro Waver: Ok. Hear me out on this one. I thought it was a total gimmick then I tried it at my sister’s and guys, I really liked it. I just got mine so I’ll show you on stories how it works. But it just makes these really pretty waves and it’s so easy. 1. Bellicon Fitness Trampoline | 2. Wooden Dumbbells and Resistance Bands | 3. Tempo Studio | 4. Everlast Heavy Bag | 5. Infrared Sauna Blanket | 6. Bala Weighted Bangle Set 1. Bellicon Fitness Trampoline: One of my best friends convinced me to splurge on one of these and it’s a very fun and easy workout that kicks up endorphins immediately. I’m sure there are more affordable ones on the market but after testing hers and a few others it seemed worth it. The last thing I wanted was a big thing in my house that I didn’t use. We can work out together with some online classes and it’s just really fun. 1. Blair Jumper | 2. Who What Wear Turtleneck Pullover | 3. Gemma Jumper 1. Blair Jumper – I just got this sweater and it’s SO SOFT. Oh my. My only warning is that it might be better for smaller chested people, what with the ruffles and what not. 1. The Daisy Platform Mule | 2. Lea Boots | 3. Emilia Thigh-High Boots | 4. Black Checkerboard Classic Slip-On Sneakers 1. The Daisy Platform Mule: The new mule that I don’t need but want. 1. Women’s Stripe Shirt | 2. Tri Stripes Vintage Tee | 3. Puff Sleeve Sweatshirt 1. Women’s Stripe Shirt: I just got this sweet puff sleeved shirt and it’s so thin and easy to layer (and drapes really well). 1. Sidney Trousers | 2. The Brut Sexy Eco-Friendly | 3. High-Rise Skinny Jeans: Danny Wash 1. Sidney Trousers: I wouldn’t put these in the ‘comfortable’ department, but they are super cool. They aren’t uncomfortable by any means, just high waisted and fitted. You may have seen me try these on on my stories (I just got them on Friday) and admittedly they aren’t for everyone (but Joanna Gaines did DM me that I HAD to keep them). 1. Engraved Charm Necklace | 2. Gold Herringbone Necklace | 3. Custom ‘Favorite Things’ Heart Necklace 1. Engraved Charm Necklace: So sweet and you can keep adding to them over the years. 1. Aston Coat | 2. Down For It All Jacket | 3. Will Jacket 1. Aston Coat: I want this coat SO BAD. It’s tweed and has that awesome menswear vibe. I don’t need it but if you do, please get it. There are so many brands that I love that are gifty- and splurgy that I forgot to include but I want to call out really quick because they are favorites of mine – Mille (those blouses!), The Great (never out of style, like ever), Ulla Johnson (truly special ‘forever’ pieces) – all splurgy but honestly I wear their pieces for years and years (they are heirloom quality) so know that if you splurge you’ll get a lot of wear out of them for a long time. So many of you left ‘your favorite things’ in the comments and on DM’s and I’m working my way through them. Thank you!!! It’s always just so nice to have a review of something before buying online these days. Let me know if you have any questions about anything above in the comments. xx For the rest of our 2020 gift guides head HERE! The post More Of My Favorite Things (Part 2): Fashion/Beauty/Health Edition appeared first on Emily Henderson. Originally from Emily Henderson https://ift.tt/2J3RXmr This past week was intense. But also fun because we started to post our gift guides Yes, we are here again! And while we have a whole holiday to get through before December starts, we can hear those jingle bells and can’t wait. So we hope you had a great week and despite holiday plans looking different for most of us this year, we also hope that you have something at least a little special planned. So with that, let’s link up… Today’s home tour is a little different and a lot INCREDIBLE. This year Architectural Digest and The Black Interior Designers Network collaborated on an interactive 3D rendered home called The Iconic Home. 15 Black interior designers can together to create a truly unique design experience. The Cabana Room by Forbes Masters is one of our favorites but they really are all incredible. From Emily: I rarely try to control my kids’ fashion, AT ALL, and it’s a lot of pink and purple over here. But for an investment coat that hopefully will last two years I wanted to be excited about it. Elliot’s navy blue peacoat that was a hand-me-down from the most fashionable 7-year old I know and she REFUSES to wear (it’s so cute I can’t handle it). She thinks it’s boring. So when I found this coat and we both squealed. It felt like a big win (and it’s a very small company, made in California). I then went on to get pajamas and a couple of dresses because while I love unicorns as much as any other middle-aged mom, I was kinda dying for a non-unicorn themed dress (and she only wears dresses). Also from Emily: ALSO, while I’m putting this on the gift guide I audibly gasped when I found this while pinning on Sunday and am so excited for the kids to pick out theirs and get these personalized. From Caitlin: I’ve been back on the east coast for 2 weeks and I have watched SO MUCH CABLE TV. (I don’t have it in LA!) Anyway, the ads for this air fryer/toaster oven-hybrid are starting to wear me down…is it actually good? Can anyone advise? Also from Caitlin: You may or may not know, but I’m the ~money and numbers~ gal around here and also the mastermind behind those big ol’ sale posts we release for major holidays! ANYWAY – I got the tip off on one that’s really good – it’s from Annie Selke (you’ve seen a whole bunch of their product in Em’s house) and while it doesn’t technically start til later this week, they’re opening it up early for y’all with code EHCYBER2020. Please enjoy!!! From Albie: Meet my very first holiday purchase for the new house! My daughter’s first thoughts were “they look like you and dad” and that made my heart smile. Hopefully, this’ll be the first of many more decor pieces that reflect us as a family. From Jess: Per usual, my father bought himself a great gift right before Christmas and his birthday. Cooooooooollllll. But it’s actually awesome and if you have a truck-owning person in your life who likes to keep things organized this is THE GIFT. It’s a storage case that attaches to a truck bed and then swings out when you need it! Here is a quote from my dad explaining why he loves it (despite him only saying like… he’s big on withholding enthusiasm… we are different in that way): “What I like about this truck bed carrier is that it takes up what is usually dead space of the bed. It swings out for easy loading and unloading. If for some reason you might need that space it lifts out very easily. If you like being organized it’s a dream come true.” Also From Jess: I can’t believe I didn’t put this book in my gift guide. Emily was the first to introduce me to Commune Design and actually gave me their first book my first Christmas at EHD. Their designs always take my breath away so I can’t wait to get my hands on their newest book. Plus the cover is very cool and would look great styled up in basically any home. From Ryann: Anytime I add something new to my skincare regimen, it can be tough to tell if it is actually doing anything for my skin which is very frustrating. But this is NOT the case for this $35 Vitamin C serum. I’ve been using it for two weeks and can 100% recognize a difference in my skin. It makes my skin feel unbelievably soft and I have noticed it has done wonders for my complexion. I cannot recommend it enough! From Mallory: Thanksgiving is gonna be REAL small and intimate this year but we all want an excuse to dress up right now, right? Well at least I do, so I went on the hunt for a festive lil thanksgiving outfit and I stumbled upon this dress that I’m OBSESSED with. It’s so comfortable, so “holiday” and the best part? IT’S 40% OFF RIGHT NOW. Plus it’s flowy enough to hide my massive post-thanksgiving dinner bloat. I snagged it quick and I’m planning to whip it out every holiday dinner ever (for years and years to come). I also just found out that it has pockets which is SUCH a heavy plus. Happy holidays, folks. From Malcolm: Are you in need of a fun quarantine activity? Try making candles! A few months ago, I spent an ENTIRE day getting creative with scents, wicks, and vessels using The Wooden Wick Co. products, and it was a great way to pass some time! They sell everything you need to make any candles, soaps, and SANITIZERS. Timely. I learned that 1) the candle-making process is quite intense, but extremely rewarding, and 2) the combination pink peony and nectarine makes the most gorgeous smelling thing I’ve ever experienced. That’s it for this week! See you tomorrow xx Opening Image Credits: Design by Forbes Masters | via Architectural Digest x Black Interior Designers Network The post The Link Up: The Winter Coat Both Emily AND Birdie Love, Mallory’s Perfect Holiday Dress, And The Coolest New Home On The Internet appeared first on Emily Henderson.
